Chapter 5 - The Voicemail

The conference room felt suddenly airless. Daniel walked over to the door, turned the deadbolt, and stood beside me as I unlocked my screen.

There were four missed calls from Richard between 4:10 AM and 4:45 AM. The first three were brief attempts, but the fourth was a four-minute voicemail recorded while I had been speeding toward the tower in the dawn darkness.

I tapped the screen. The speaker crackled, and Richard’s voice poured into the room.

He wasn't angry. He wasn't arrogant. He was panting, his voice trembling with an unmistakable, suffocating terror.

*“Clara... pick up. For God’s sake, Clara, answer the phone! If you’re executing Section Four-C, you have to stop the automated override on the Zurich wire. Do you hear me?! You can take the company, you can take the houses, you can ruin me—I don’t care! But do not freeze the Asclepius account!”*

There was a loud crash in the background of the recording, followed by Emily’s muffled, terrified voice crying out: *“Richard, the transaction bounced! It says authorization revoked!”*

Richard’s voice returned to the microphone, so close I could hear his shallow, ragged breaths.

*“Clara, listen to me very carefully. You think your father died of a sudden myocardial infarction in his sleep. That's what the death certificate says. That’s what Dr. Mercer told the press. It was a lie. Mercer was paid ten million dollars to alter the toxicology report! Robert was poisoned, Clara! Victoria poisoned him with synthetic cardiac glycosides over six months!”*

A gasp caught in my throat. My knees gave out, and I slammed both hands onto the table to keep from collapsing.

Daniel grabbed my shoulders, steadying me. "Clara..."

The voicemail continued, Richard’s voice cracking with hysterical urgency:

*“I found out a week before he died. Victoria threatened to frame me for it if I went to the police. She had paper trails linking the procurement of the digitalis analog to my corporate accounts! The recurring transfers to Asclepius—that wasn't my hush money! That was Mercer’s blackmail! Mercer has the original, uncorrupted blood samples in a cryogenic facility in New Jersey. If that wire doesn't clear by noon today, Mercer's dead-man switch activates. He won't just release the samples to the FBI—Victoria will know we leaked it, and she won't let either of us survive the week. Clara, please! Unfreeze the account, or we are all dead!”*

The call clicked off with a harsh, synthetic tone.

Silence descended upon the room, heavy and suffocating. The air smelled of cold paper and polished wood.

My father. My brilliant, invincible father who had built Scott Global from a two-room office in Queens into an international titan. He hadn't died peacefully in his bed. He had spent his final six months being slowly, methodically dismantled by the woman he had welcomed into his home.

And Richard—the man I had sworn to love, the man who had slept beside me while I wept over my father's empty casket—had known the entire time. He hadn't fought for justice. He had used my father's murder as currency to secure his own power, sleeping with the murderer's daughter while funneling my family’s money to keep the slaughter buried.

"Clara," Daniel said, his voice shaking with a rage that matched my own. "We need to call the Federal Bureau of Investigation right now."

I stood up straight. The grief that had paralyzed me moments before burned away, incinerated by a white-hot, diamond-hard fury.

"No," I said, wiping a solitary tear from my cheek before it could fall. "If we call the FBI now, Mercer vanishes, the samples disappear, and Victoria’s high-priced lawyers will bury the truth forever. Richard said the deadline was noon. What time is it?"

Daniel checked his watch. "Eleven-fifteen."

"Get the car," I commanded, grabbing my coat. "We're going to New Jersey."
