Chapter 8 - A Mother's Legacy

Bianca stood trembling in the center of the study, the walls closing in on her. The haughty, invincible queen of high society was crumbling before Ethan's eyes.
"Ethan... please," she stammered, tears of sheer panic ruining her mascara. "I was stressed. I had postpartum depression from... from trying to be their mother! I didn't know what I was doing! You can't send me to prison!"
"Postpartum depression?" Ethan scoffed with disgust. "You never gave birth to them. You barely spent ten minutes a week with them."
He stood up, walking toward the bookshelf behind his desk. He pulled a hidden latch behind an antique leather encyclopedia, revealing a small, velvet-lined wall safe. From within, Ethan pulled out a sealed legal document bearing the seal of Clara’s estate attorney, dated three days before she passed away.
"Do you know why I married you, Bianca?" Ethan asked quietly.
Bianca swallowed hard, shaking her head.
"Because six months after Clara died, you showed up at the children’s charity foundation. You knew their favorite lullabies. You wore Clara's favorite brand of perfume. You told me you were Clara’s college roommate who had promised her on her deathbed that you would watch over her girls."
Bianca backed away toward the fireplace, her breathing shallow and ragged.
"I believed you because I was shattered by grief," Ethan said, unfolding the letter. "I wanted my daughters to have a mother so desperately that I ignored the red flags. But yesterday, while I was waiting for my flight in Heathrow, I finally opened the sealed letters Clara left behind for when the girls turned five."
Ethan read aloud from the paper in his hand:
*“‘Ethan, if a woman named Bianca Thorne ever approaches you, keep our babies away from her. She was not my friend. She was dismissed from our university clinic for forging medical prescriptions and embezzling from the student fund. She is dangerous, calculating, and obsessed with our family’s wealth.’”*
Ethan folded the paper and looked at her. "Clara knew what you were eight years ago. You didn't marry me to be a wife. You waited for her to die, researched every detail of her life, and conned your way into this house."
"That's a lie! Clara hated me because I was prettier than her!" Bianca screamed, her voice cracking in hysterical desperation. "She was jealous! She poisoned your mind from the grave!"

Ethan didn't respond to the madness. He simply looked toward the study doors and nodded.
