Chapter 11 - The Shadow on the Snow

Ethan stepped toward the island, staring down at the tarnished metal box. The initials *C. E. V.*—Clara Elizabeth Vance—were etched into the lid in the delicate cursive script he knew by heart.
His fingers trembled as he lifted the heavy brass latch.
Inside lay a thick leather-bound diary and a small, unlabeled medical vial containing a clear amber liquid. Tucked into the front cover of the diary was a handwritten note, the ink smeared with dried water droplets.
The handwriting did not belong to Clara.
It belonged to Bianca.
Ethan unfolded the note. The words were scrawled in frantic, jagged lines:
*“You think you won, Clara. You think having his babies makes you untouchable. But doctors can make mistakes. Nurses can switch medications. Cancer is so unpredictable, isn't it? Soon, your life will be mine. Your husband will be mine. And your precious little girls will be entirely at my mercy.”*
Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat. The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
Clara hadn't died from an aggressive, sudden resurgence of her illness.
She had been systematically poisoned.
"Mark..." Ethan whispered, his voice shaking with a fury so deep, so primal, that it choked the air from his lungs. "Call the medical examiner. Call the state police. Call everyone."
Before Mark could answer, the mansion's main perimeter alarm screamed to life.
A deafening siren tore through the midnight silence, red security strobes flashing across the snow outside the kitchen windows.
Mark drew his weapon instantly, tapping his earpiece. "Perimeter breach! North gate! Talk to me!"
The voice of the gate guard came through the radio, garbled by heavy static and wind:
*"Boss! A black SUV just rammed through the north security barrier! Two armed men just cut the power to the outer grid! They’re not running away—they’re heading straight for the children's wing!"*

Ethan looked toward the ceiling, where his four sleeping daughters lay defenseless in the dark.
And then, every single light in the mansion clicked off.
