Chapter 5 - The Hospital and the Lockout

The private floor at St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet, illuminated only by soft, warm hallway lights.
Dr. Aris, a long-time family physician, completed his examination of my back and wrists. He confirmed that while I had deep soft-tissue bruising and severe lacerations from the belt buckle, there were no broken bones or internal bleeding.
"He applied considerable force, Thomas," Dr. Aris told my father in the hallway, outside my room. "If she hadn't stopped him when she did, those welts could have caused permanent nerve damage. I've compiled a full forensic medical report for the District Attorney."
Inside the room, I sat on the edge of the bed wearing a soft cotton gown, sipping warm tea. Eleanor sat in an armchair nearby, her laptop open, working furiously on legal filings.
"Where is he now?" I asked Eleanor.
"Daniel is in a holding cell at the central precinct," Eleanor replied, looking up over her glasses. "His personal attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to us—tried to request an emergency bail hearing at two in the morning. The judge denied it instantly due to the severity of the forensic evidence and the flight risk posed by his frozen international assets."
"What about Vanessa?"
Eleanor sneered slightly. "Vanessa was released from the precinct at three a.m. after giving a three-hour statement trying to throw Daniel completely under the bus. She claimed Daniel forced her to stay at the house and lied to her about your marriage."
I let out a soft, humorless laugh. "She really is loyal to whoever holds the checkbook."
"Not anymore," Eleanor said with a cold smile. "I filed an emergency injunction this morning freezing her personal accounts as well, pending our civil conspiracy lawsuit. She can't even pay her apartment rent in Manhattan."
Just then, my father stepped back into the room, holding a steaming mug of coffee.
"Dad," I said, looking at him. "What happens to Whitmore Global tomorrow morning?"
My father set his coffee down and sat beside me on the bed, taking my hand in his. His large, warm palm covered my bruised wrist gently.
"Whitmore Global was built on a series of shell companies and credit lines I guaranteed," Dad explained smoothly. "Tomorrow morning at eight thirty, when the New York Stock Exchange opens, Vance-Sterling Enterprises will execute a complete takeover bid. We already hold sixty-two percent of the voting debt."
"Who will run the company?" I asked.
My father looked at me with a proud, intense gaze. "You will, Claire."
I blinked, surprised. "Me?"
"You hold an MBA from Columbia that you gave up to play the dutiful wife for a man who didn't deserve you," Dad said firmly. "You know the shipping logistics better than Daniel ever did. You designed their supply chain infrastructure four years ago while he was taking credit for it at golf clubs."
May you like
He squeezed my hand.
"It's time you take back what is yours, daughter."
