Chapter 2 - The First Collapse

The ringtone pierced the quiet of the study. It wasn't his standard ring; it was the emergency chime reserved exclusively for the board of directors at Whitmore Global.

Daniel’s smug smile flickered, but he didn't immediately answer. He looked at me, then at Vanessa, trying to maintain his posture of total control. "Probably just a late update on the European merger," he said aloud, as if trying to convince himself.

He tapped the screen and held the phone to his ear. "This is Daniel."

The voice on the other end was loud enough for me to hear from three feet away. It was Arthur Vance, the senior board chairman and a man who had backed Daniel for six years.

"Daniel, where the hell are you?!" Vance roared, his voice shaking with anger. "The emergency board meeting just concluded. The board executed Section 9 of your executive agreement!"

Daniel froze. The color began to drain from his face. "Section 9? Arthur, what are you talking about? Section 9 is for corporate treason or insolvency—"

"Five minutes ago, Vance-Sterling Enterprises exercised their option to call in the eighty-million-dollar credit line they backed for your company five years ago!" Vance yelled. "Your father-in-law just withdrew his equity backing! Our shares are dropping forty percent in post-market trading right now!"

Daniel dropped his hand slightly, the phone slipping an inch from his ear. "Eighty million? He... he backed that as a personal wedding gift—"

"There is no 'wedding gift' in corporate law, you idiot!" Vance barked. "It was a revocable loan tied to your marital status and moral conduct clauses! Thomas Vance personally called the SEC and the lead underwriters. You're being removed as CEO effective immediately! Security is locking your office down as we speak!"

The line went dead.

Daniel stood frozen in the center of his mahogany-lined study. His phone slipped from his fingers and hit the hardwood floor with a sharp clack.

Vanessa’s smile dissolved completely. She took a step into the room, setting her wine glass on the bookshelf. "Daniel? What did he say? What does he mean, removed as CEO?"

Daniel didn't answer her. He stared at me as if he were seeing a stranger for the first time. His breathing became shallow and fast.

Before he could say a word, his phone chimed again on the floor. A second notification. Then a third. Then a fourth.

I picked up the phone from the floor and held it so he could see the screen.

It was a bank notification from First National Commerce. His personal accounts, credit lines, and joint wealth management funds had been frozen under an emergency court order initiated by the Vance Family Trust.

"You..." Daniel choked out, taking a step toward me. His hands were shaking now, not from rage, but from sheer terror. "What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Daniel," I said softly, standing up from the leather chair despite the throbbing pain in my back. "I just told my father it was time."

Vanessa rushed to Daniel’s side, grabbing his arm. "Daniel, do something! Call your lawyers! He can't just take your company!"

"Vanessa," I said, looking at her in my silk robe. "I suggest you take off that robe. You have approximately ten minutes before the private security team my father dispatched arrives to remove you from this estate."

"This estate belongs to Daniel!" Vanessa hissed.

May you like

"Check the deed," I replied calmly. "The land, the house, and every piece of art inside were purchased through the Vance Estate Holding Company. Daniel was merely a tenant."

Daniel’s knees buckled. The man who had raised a leather belt against me five minutes ago collapsed onto his knees on the Persian rug, clutching his head in horror as the reality of his total ruin set in.
