Chapter 4 - Stripped of Everything

The flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers illuminated the long glass windows of the estate.
Within minutes, four uniformed officers and a detective stepped into the foyer. The lead detective, a veteran named Miller, greeted my father with a respectful nod before turning his attention to Daniel.
"Daniel Whitmore?" Detective Miller asked.
Daniel tried to straighten his collar, attempting to regain a shred of his corporate dignity. "Detective, thank God you're here. This is a massive misunderstanding. My father-in-law is using his influence to orchestrate an unlawful lockout—"
"Mr. Whitmore," Detective Miller interrupted coldly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "We have a recorded 911 call log, photo documentation of physical injuries, and physical evidence recovered from the scene. Hands behind your back."
"You can't arrest me!" Daniel shouted, backing away toward the dining room. "Do you know who I am?! I am the CEO of Whitmore Global!"
"You were the CEO," Eleanor, my attorney, chimed in smoothly from the staircase, holding a sheaf of legal papers. "As of eight minutes ago, the board accepted your forced resignation. You currently hold no executive authority, no corporate indemnity, and no access to company funds."
Mark, my father's head of security, stepped in front of Daniel, blocking his retreat. With a swift, professional motion, Detective Miller grabbed Daniel's arm, twisted it behind his back, and snapped the metal cuffs around his wrists.
Daniel let out a sharp cry of pain. "Claire! Tell them to stop! You're destroying everything we built!"
I stood beside my father on the marble landing, looking down at the man I had loved for six years. "We didn't build anything, Daniel. You spent six years trying to make me feel small so you could pretend you were big. It's over."
As the officers began leading Daniel toward the front door, Vanessa tried to sneak out behind them, carrying her bags.
"Hold on, ma'am," another officer said, stepping in front of her. "We need your statement regarding the events inside the house tonight. You'll be coming down to the precinct as a material witness."
"Witness?!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking. "I didn't do anything! I was just a guest!"
"A guest wearing my wife's silk robe," my father added coldly. "Officers, please ensure she leaves all property belonging to my daughter on the premises before she enters your vehicle."
Two female officers escorted a crying, hysterical Vanessa toward the side guest room to change, leaving her expensive designer clothes and jewelry behind.
Daniel was marched out the front door into the rain. As he was pushed into the back seat of the police cruiser, he looked back at the grand mansion—the life of luxury, power, and prestige he had stolen—and realized that every single piece of it had vanished in less than an hour.
My father turned to me, his harsh expression melting into deep, aching concern. He gently put his arm around my shoulders.

"Let's get you to the hospital, sweetheart," Dad whispered. "We need to document those injuries and make sure you're okay."
"I'm okay, Dad," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder. "For the first time in six years, I'm actually okay."
