Chapter 6 - The Fallout at the Estate

While I slept soundly in my own bed for the first time in months, the Langston family dynasty was experiencing a very different kind of Saturday night.
According to the early morning news briefs and confidential updates sent by Detective Miller’s office, the raid on the Langston estate had been nothing short of cinematic. When federal agents and local financial crimes units breached the iron gates at 9:00 p.m., the engagement celebration had instantly devolved into absolute chaos.
Guests fled the banquet hall in designer gowns and bespoke tuxedos, frantically calling their chauffeurs as investigators seized accounting ledgers, laptops, and family trust documents from Regina’s private study.
Marcelo had spent three hours in a holding cell before his high-priced defense attorney managed to secure a conditional release pending arraignment. But the damage wasn't just legal; it was total, irreversible public humiliation. Within twelve hours, the local financial papers had picked up the story, splashing headlines across digital media outlets: “Tampa Real Estate Scions Implicated in Multi-Million Dollar Marriage Fraud Ring.”
My phone had not stopped vibrating since 6:00 a.m.
There were dozens of missed calls and frantic text messages from Marcelo, shifting wildly between desperate apologies, furious threats, and pathetic pleas for reconciliation.
“Elena, please, you have to call off the police. It was a misunderstanding! Mother was just trying to protect our joint portfolio!” “We can fix this. We can annul the marriage quietly without involving federal prosecutors. Please don't do this to our family.” “I love you, Elena. Please pick up the phone.”
I sat at my kitchen island, sipping a steaming cup of freshly brewed espresso, calmly deleting each message without opening them. Family. They had used that word like a weapon to excuse cruelty, exclusion, and theft. But family didn't banish you to the kitchen while treating you like a servant at your own wedding reception. Family didn't steal four hundred and fifty thousand dollars behind your back while smiling in your face at the altar.
My phone rang again. Caller ID: Marcelo (Mobile).
This time, I swiped to answer, pressing the phone slowly to my ear.
“Elena? Oh, thank God,” Marcelo’s voice cracked through the speaker, sounding exhausted, panicked, and utterly defeated. “Please tell me you dropped the charges. The police seized our operating accounts this morning. We can’t even access our personal credit cards. Mother is hysterical.”
“Good morning, Marcelo,” I said, my voice ice-cold and steady.
“Elena, listen to me, we can work this out—”
“You had your chance to work this out yesterday afternoon when your mother told me to go eat in the kitchen,” I interrupted smoothly. “You stood there and watched her humiliate me in front of forty people. You thought you had won. You thought you could take my money, ruin my company, and treat me like trash.”
“That was Mother’s idea! I tried to stop her—”
“You didn't try to stop anything, Marcelo,” I snapped, cutting him off completely. “You watched every single second of it. And now you get to watch the consequences.”

“Elena, wait—!”
I ended the call, blocked his number permanently, and tossed the phone onto the counter. It felt as though a massive, suffocating weight had been lifted from my chest. The chapter was closed. Now, it was time to write the next one.
