Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

The digital clock on my laptop screen ticked past 8:30 p.m. Outside my floor-to-ceiling windows, the glittering skyline of downtown Tampa stretched out into the night, indifferent to the personal war zone brewing inside my living room.

I had spent the last two hours pulling bank statements, tracing IP addresses, and compiling a watertight portfolio of financial fraud, forgery, and identity theft. Every single unauthorized wire transfer had an audit trail leading straight back to Marcelo’s personal laptop and Regina’s corporate office.

My phone rang again. This time it was an unknown local number.

I hesitated for a second before swiping to answer. “Hello?”

“Elena? Thank God you picked up.”

It wasn't Marcelo. It was a deep, steady voice I didn't immediately recognize, though there was a familiar cadence to it.

“Who is this?” I demanded, my hand instinctively hovering over the keyboard.

“My name is Detective Miller, Tampa Financial Crimes Division,” the voice said calmly. “I’m calling because our automated fraud detection systems flagged a suspicious surge of corporate wire activity originating from Langston Holdings targeting your design firm accounts tonight. We’ve already placed a temporary freeze on the receiving accounts, but we need your formal statement to issue arrest warrants for wire fraud and identity theft.”

I blinked, staring at my computer screen in stunned silence. “An arrest warrant? For Marcelo and Regina Langston?”

“And their corporate associates,” Detective Miller added smoothly. “It appears they’ve been running a systematic asset-stripping scheme targeting high-net-worth individuals entering into marriage contracts with members of their family. You’re not their first victim, Mrs. Langston—though you’re certainly the first one smart enough to lock down her biometric authentication before they cleared the accounts.”

A wave of profound validation washed over me, replacing the last lingering traces of heartbreak with pure, unadulterated adrenaline.

“I have all the documentation right here,” I said, my voice steady and resolute. “Every wire transfer, every forged power of attorney, every fake notary stamp. When can you meet?”

“Give me thirty minutes,” Detective Miller replied. “And Elena? Stay inside your apartment. Do not answer your door for anyone—especially your husband.”

After hanging up, I leaned back in my chair and let out a long, shuddering breath. The marriage that had started with a humiliating lunch and a tossed napkin was about to end with federal investigators kicking down the doors of the Langston family estate.

Just then, the lobby intercom buzzed loudly.

I glanced at the security monitor mounted by the front door. The camera feed showed Marcelo standing in the downstairs lobby, pacing back and forth anxiously, looking disheveled without his tuxedo jacket, frantically whispering into his phone.

A moment later, my cell phone lit up with a text message from his number.

“Elena, please come down. Mother is having a panic attack, and the police are asking questions here at the house. We need to talk. Please.”

I stared at the screen, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. Panic attacks and police at the house? It looked like Detective Miller’s colleagues hadn't waited for thirty minutes after all. They had moved much faster than I anticipated.

I picked up my phone, tapped out a short, precise reply, and hit send.

“Tell your mother I’m learning a great many things today, Marcelo. Enjoy the lunch.”

I locked my phone, turned back to my laptop, and waited for the doorbell to ring.
