Chapter 9 - The Settlement Slaughter

The mediation conference room on the twenty-second floor of the justice center was sterile, wide, and merciless.
Ethan sat between his criminal defense lawyer and Richard Vance. He was pale, hollow-eyed, and silent, looking down at the table like a prisoner awaiting sentencing. On the other side of the room, Patricia and Vanessa had been forced to attend as third-party respondents regarding the fraudulent transfers to V&P Holdings.
Vanessa looked completely hollowed out. Her boutique was gone, her luxury car had been repossessed two days prior, and around her neck, where the sapphire pendant had once gleamed, was an empty space of bare skin.
Evelyn Vance sat beside me, opening a thick leather folder with the precision of a surgeon preparing a scalpel.
The mediator, retired Judge Robert Vance, cleared his throat. "We are here to finalize the marital dissolution and financial restitution agreement between Claire Montgomery and Ethan Montgomery. Ms. Vance, present your terms."
Evelyn didn't blink. "The terms are non-negotiable. If the petitioner refuses to execute this agreement today, we will immediately proceed with formal criminal indictment referrals to the state attorney general's office for wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement."
Ethan’s criminal lawyer gave a tight, grim nod. "Understood. Proceed."
"First," Evelyn stated, "the marital residence, appraised at $720,000, will be awarded exclusively to Claire Montgomery, free and clear of any claim by the husband. The fraudulent $180,000 home equity line of credit will be designated as the sole, non-dischargeable personal liability of Ethan Montgomery, indemnifying Mrs. Montgomery completely."
Patricia opened her mouth to protest, but Ethan’s lawyer raised a sharp hand, silencing her instantly.
"Second," Evelyn continued, "the $462,000 dissipated through the fraudulent entity V&P Holdings will be repaid in full. To satisfy this judgment, all remaining corporate accounts of Velvet & Pine LLC are hereby seized, alongside the immediate liquidation of Vanessa Montgomery’s personal luxury assets acquired via marital funds—including designer accessories, electronics, and vehicles."
Vanessa let out a strangled, weeping sound. "Those are *mine*!"
"They were purchased with my children's food and tuition money," I said, looking directly across the table into Vanessa’s tear-streaked face. "You don't own a single thread on your back, Vanessa. I paid for it."
"Furthermore," Evelyn pressed on, "the vintage sapphire pendant, valued at $6,500, will be immediately surrendered to Mrs. Montgomery today. The proceeds from its return will be deposited directly back into the children’s 529 college savings account, alongside an additional $50,000 restitution payment drawn from Ethan Montgomery’s liquidated 401(k)."
Ethan flinched as though struck, but kept his head down. "What else?" he whispered hoarsely.
"Sole physical and sole legal custody of Sophie and Noah Montgomery remains permanently with Claire," Evelyn finished. "Ethan will receive supervised visitation every alternating weekend, contingent upon maintaining clean drug screenings and undergoing mandatory psychiatric anger management counseling. Child support is set at $3,800 monthly, to be garnished directly from any future wages. Ethan Montgomery will also assume full responsibility for all of Mrs. Montgomery’s legal fees."
The room was utterly silent.
Richard Vance leaned over to Ethan. "Ethan, looking at the criminal exposure on the table... if this goes to trial, you are looking at three to five years in state prison. Sign the agreement."
Ethan’s hand shook violently as he reached for the silver pen.
Beside him, Patricia was trembling with silent fury, her face twisted in bitter hatred. "Ethan, don't do this! She's stripping you bare! She’s leaving you with nothing!"
Ethan finally snapped. He turned on his mother, his eyes wild with exhaustion and rage. "Shut up, Mom! Just shut the hell up! You and Vanessa took everything from me! You bled me dry for years, and now look where I am! Sign your part of the surrender and get out of my sight!"
Patricia gasped, recoiling as if slapped. Vanessa broke into hysterical, silent sobs.
Ethan turned back to the paper. His signature was shaky and broken, but it was there. With five strokes of the pen, he signed away the house, his savings, his custody claim, and his control.
From her purse, Vanessa pulled out a small black velvet box. With trembling, humiliated fingers, she slid it across the long table toward me.
I opened the box.
There it was. The deep blue sapphire, encircled by diamonds, gleaming in the fluorescent light. It had once represented my humiliation, my blind submission, and the betrayal of my children.
Now, it was simply currency. A debt paid in full.
I snapped the box shut with a sharp, decisive click.
"We're done here," I said, standing up.
May you like
I didn't look back at Ethan, Patricia, or Vanessa as I walked out of the room. Their toxic, codependent house of mirrors had finally shattered, and they were left to choke on the shards.
