Chapter 5 - The Shadow LLC

By Friday, Evelyn’s forensic accountant, a quiet, bespectacled man named Mark Keller, had finished his initial audit of Ethan’s financial footprint.
I sat in Evelyn’s office, sipping black coffee that had gone cold hours ago. The meeting with Marcus Sterling the day before had resulted in a signed letter of intent—a lifeline that would keep my firm floating for years—but the battle on the home front was only growing darker.
Mark placed a thick, three-ring binder on the desk. He didn't smile.
"Claire," Mark began, adjusting his glasses, "your husband isn't just financially irresponsible. What we’re looking at here is a calculated, systematic diversion of marital assets spanning over five years."
I felt the blood drain from my face. "Five years? Not just the boutique loan?"
"Not even close," Mark said, opening the binder to a detailed financial flow chart. "In 2019, Ethan registered an entity called 'V&P Holdings' in Delaware. Neither your name nor your social security number was attached. On paper, the managing partner is listed as Vanessa Montgomery, with Patricia Montgomery holding a minority stake. Ethan was listed as the financial trustee."
"What was the entity used for?"
"It was a laundering funnel for Ethan’s personal income," Evelyn answered sharply. "Whenever Ethan earned bonuses, performance incentives, or consulting retainers from his engineering firm, he had his employer direct portions of the payments into V&P Holdings under the guise of 'subcontractor fees'."
Mark tapped the chart. "Over the last five years, Ethan transferred approximately $462,000 of marital earnings into V&P Holdings. And the expenditures from that account are breathtaking."
He turned the page, revealing line after line of bank statements.
"$14,000 for a luxury cruise to the Mediterranean for Patricia and Vanessa. $42,000 to pay off Vanessa’s cumulative credit card debt. A leased BMW 5-Series registered to Patricia, with monthly payments of $850 drawn directly from the LLC. Routine spa treatments, designer clothing, high-end dining... Ethan wasn't just 'helping out' his sister when she had an emergency. He was entirely subsidizing their lavish lifestyle while you paid for his family's groceries."
I gripped the edge of the conference table until my knuckles turned white.
Eleven years.
I remembered sitting at our kitchen table three years ago, crying because we couldn't afford to take Sophie and Noah to Disney World for Sophie’s fifth birthday. Ethan had held me, stroking my hair, whispering that times were tough, that his firm was downsizing bonuses, that we had to make sacrifices for the family's future.
That exact same month, according to the document in front of me, Ethan had wired $8,000 to V&P Holdings so Vanessa could spend two weeks in Cabo San Lucas celebrating her thirtieth birthday.
The sheer cruelty of it took my breath away. It wasn't just theft. It was psychological warfare. He had kept me exhausted, stressed, and constantly worried about money so that I would remain compliant, while he played the heroic provider for his mother and sister.
"Can we recover it?" I asked, my voice vibrating with a lethal, quiet rage.
"Under state law," Evelyn explained, her eyes gleaming with predatory legal instinct, "any marital funds diverted without the knowledge or consent of the spouse constitute fraudulent conveyance and dissipation of marital assets. The court will add every single cent of that $462,000 back into the marital pot."
"And the boutique loan?"
"The $180,000 second mortgage was obtained via identity theft and forgery," Evelyn said. "I’ve already contacted the fraud division of the lending bank. They are opening an internal criminal investigation. Ethan won't just owe you that money, Claire. He is facing potential federal wire fraud charges."
Before I could reply, Evelyn’s administrative assistant knocked quickly and stepped inside.
"Evelyn, you need to see this. Ethan Montgomery’s lawyer just filed an emergency motion for ex-parte custody."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, taking the motion from her assistant. She scanned the pages, a cold, mocking smile spreading across her lips.
"What is it?" I asked, my heart seizing at the word *custody*. "What is he trying to do?"
"He’s alleging that you are an unfit mother," Evelyn said, looking up from the brief. "He submitted Patricia’s social media post, Vanessa’s medical clinic report documenting her bruised lip, and an affidavit signed by Patricia claiming you have a history of violent outbursts. He is asking the family court judge for immediate, exclusive physical custody of Sophie and Noah, and an order barring you from the marital residence."
Tears of sheer fury pricked my eyes. "He wants to take my children?!"
"He wants to terrify you into dropping the financial audit," Evelyn said, standing up and smoothing her jacket. "He thinks if he threatens your babies, you’ll fold and sign whatever settlement he puts in front of you."
Evelyn leaned across the desk, her gaze piercing.

"The emergency hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. Ethan thinks he’s walking into an ambush where he holds all the cards. He has no idea that we have the receipts, the video, and the law on our side. Go home, Claire. Kiss your children. Tomorrow, we finish him."
