Chapter 4 - The Ambush

By Thursday afternoon, I was back at my studio. Montgomery Interiors was a boutique design firm nestled in the historic district, specializing in luxury residential renovations. I had spent eight years building this business from scratch, pouring every late night and creative impulse into its reputation.
Today was a critical day. Marcus Sterling, the most prominent commercial and luxury real estate developer in the state, was coming in for a consultation. He was developing a twenty-million-dollar private estate club along the riverfront, and landing the interior architecture contract would secure my business—and my children’s financial independence—for the next five years.
I adjusted my tailored cream blazer, smoothed my hair over my collar, and reviewed the material swatches laid out across the marble conference table.
The brass bell above the front entrance chimed.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Sterling," I called out, stepping out of the conference room with a welcoming smile.
The smile died instantly.
Standing in the foyer was not Marcus Sterling. It was Patricia and Vanessa.
Vanessa was wearing oversized designer sunglasses, dramatically tilted up to reveal the faint bruising on her cheek. Around her neck, gleaming ostentatiously against her black cashmere sweater, was the $6,500 sapphire pendant. Patricia stood beside her like an attack dog, clutching a designer handbag that I had unwittingly paid off through Ethan’s secret credit lines.
"Can I help you?" I said, keeping my voice cold and projecting an authority I desperately hoped didn't waver. "This is a private business. You need to leave."
"We're not going anywhere, Claire," Patricia announced loudly, ensuring my two junior designers at their desks could hear every syllable. "You think you can hide behind your fancy little office after beating my daughter and turning my son into an emotional wreck?"
Vanessa stepped forward, pulling off her sunglasses to reveal theatrical tears. "Look at what you did to me! You attacked me in front of your children! Ethan can't even sleep, and you're here playing businesswoman like nothing happened!"
My assistant, Chloe, stood up from her desk, her eyes wide with alarm. "Claire, should I call building security?"
"Yes, Chloe. Call them immediately," I instructed without breaking eye contact with Patricia.
"Go ahead! Call them!" Patricia sneered, taking an aggressive step into the showroom. "Let the whole world know what kind of violent psychopath Claire really is! You stole Ethan’s money, you ran away with his babies, and you assaulted his sister because you were jealous!"
"Jealous?" I took a slow, deliberate step forward, my eyes locking onto the sparkling blue stone resting on Vanessa's chest. "Of what, Vanessa? Jealous of a thirty-two-year-old woman who can’t pay her own rent? Jealous of a failed boutique owner who needed her brother to forge my name to steal a $180,000 home loan just to keep her doors open?"
Vanessa’s face went chalk-white. "Shut up!"
"Or maybe I'm jealous of that necklace," I continued, raising my voice just enough to cut through her panic. "That $6,500 antique sapphire. Did Ethan tell you where that money came from, Vanessa? Did he tell you he took it out of Sophie and Noah’s 529 college savings plan? You are literally wearing my five-year-old son’s education around your neck."
"He gave it to me as a gift!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning shrill and defensive. "He loves me! He’s my brother!"
"He's a thief," I fired back. "And you are in possession of stolen marital assets. If you don't take that necklace off and get out of my office in ten seconds, the security guards won't be the only ones arriving. The police will be right behind them to charge you with grand larceny and criminal trespass."
"You wouldn't dare—" Patricia began, raising her finger.
"Is there a problem here?"
A deep, commanding baritone cut through the tension.
We all turned. Standing in the doorway was Marcus Sterling. Tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal bespoke suit, carrying a leather portfolio. His sharp gray eyes took in the scene—the screaming mother-in-law, the hysterical daughter clutching her necklace, and me, standing tall in the center of the room.
Patricia instantly shifted gears, trying to weaponize her victimhood. "Sir, you shouldn't do business with this woman. She is violent, she—"
"I know exactly who Mrs. Montgomery is," Marcus interrupted smoothly, his voice slicing through Patricia’s nonsense like a scalpel. "She came highly recommended by three of my top commercial partners. What I do not know is who you two are, and why you are creating a public disturbance in a professional establishment."
Marcus turned his head slightly toward the glass doors behind him. Two towering building security officers were already entering the lobby.
"Officers," Marcus said calmly, pointing at Patricia and Vanessa. "These two individuals are trespassing and harassing the tenant. Please escort them off the property and ensure they are barred from the building registry."
Vanessa gasped in humiliation. Patricia sputtered, her face turning an ugly shade of magenta. "You can't do this! Do you know who my son is?!"
"I don't care who your son is, madam," Marcus replied coldly. "Get out."
The security guards took each woman firmly by the elbow. Vanessa yanked her arm back in frustration, nearly tripping on her heels, while Patricia hissed venomous curses under her breath as they were dragged backward through the glass double doors into the street.
The studio fell into dead silence.
My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. My hands felt cold. I took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down the lapel of my blazer.
"Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "I deeply apologize for that unprofessional display. Family legal matters have... escalated."
Marcus looked at me for a long moment. Then, the corner of his mouth curved into an approving smirk.

"Don't apologize, Claire," Marcus said, walking toward the conference table and setting down his portfolio. "A woman who can look down bullies without flinching is exactly the kind of woman I trust to handle a twenty-million-dollar build. Now, let’s look at those floor plans."
