Chapter 7 - The Secret Cellphone

The magnesium smoke triggered the overhead sprinklers, drenching the entire ICU hallway in a frigid downpour.

"Medical team, get in there!" Vance roared, coughing through his sleeve as he kicked open Paige’s hospital room door.

The doctors swarmed Paige's bed. Graham had indeed unhooked her arterial detox line, but because we arrived within seconds, the lead intensivist slammed the main valve shut and re-established the saline flush. Within forty seconds, Paige’s erratic heart rhythm snapped back into an organized, albeit fragile, sinus beat.

"She’s stable!" the doctor yelled over the alarms. "We got her back!"

I leaned against the tiled wall, soaking wet, shivering from both the icy sprinkler water and the pure adrenaline coursing through my veins.

"Detective!" an officer called from the stairwell. "He dropped the black bag in the trash chute. It was a decoy—no gas, just empty glass saline bottles and a brick. He fled through the basement loading dock. Stole an ambulance, broke through the gate. He's on the interstate heading north."

Vance cursed under his breath, wiping soot and water from his eyes. "Put an APB out to state troopers. Intercept all exits toward the Canadian border."

I walked back into Paige's room, watching my sister-in-law's pale, bruised face beneath the ventilator mask. On the bedside table sat Paige’s personal leather purse, which the paramedics had transported from the tavern and tagged as personal effects.

I approached the table, driven by an instinctive hunch. I unzipped the side pocket.

Inside lay Paige’s car keys, some lip balm—and a second, slim, black burner phone that was vibrating violently against the vinyl lining.

I looked at Vance, who was shouting orders into his shoulder radio in the hallway. Without a word, I pulled out the burner phone and slid the notification shade down.

A single text message was glowing on the cracked OLED screen:

*From: Unknown*

*Message: Graham failed at the hospital. He is retreating to the hunting cabin at Blackwood Ridge to destroy the forged land deeds before the feds raid it. Meet him there with the secondary passport. Bring the offshore codes. - Cross.*

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

*Cross.* Donald Cross—my father’s corrupt former partner. He wasn't just buying the land; he was orchestrating Graham’s entire operation from the shadows.

And more importantly: Graham wasn't fleeing to Canada. He had doubled back to the one place nobody expected him to go: my family’s ancestral property on Blackwood Ridge.

I slipped the burner phone into my damp pocket. I knew the police would set up road blocks and take hours to obtain another warrant. By then, the documents proving my ownership would be turned to ashes in the cabin fireplace, and Graham would slip into the dense mountain woods forever.

I turned away from the hospital room, quietly slipped through the secondary exit, and headed straight for the parking garage.
