Chapter 5 - The Hospital Stakeout

The realization made the room spin around me. Graham didn't just want out of a gambling debt; he was orchestrating a multi-million-dollar land heist. He had used my father's death, our wedding, and four years of domestic tenderness as a calculated setup to execute me and seize the ridge.

Suddenly, Vance’s police radio crackled violently to life on his hip.

*"Unit four, we have a Code Red at St. Jude’s Memorial, third-floor ICU. Unknown male matching Graham Calder’s description was spotted near the pediatric ward elevator, wearing scrubs and medical credentials."*

Vance was on his feet in half a second, his hand snapping onto his service weapon. "Stay here! Do not open this door for anyone except Officer Miller!"

"Take me with you!" I screamed, lunging after him. "He isn't there for Paige! He knows Paige didn't die! He's going there to finish her off so she can't testify against him!"

"Mrs. Calder, you are a target!"

"I am the only person who can identify him in a crowd! Graham can alter his appearance with prosthetics and glasses—he used to do theater design in college! You won't recognize him, but I will!"

Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, seeing the fierce, lethal clarity in my eyes. The helpless victim was gone; in her place was a woman who had clawed her way back from the grave.

"Get in the car," Vance ordered sharply. "Keep your head down."

The ride to St. Jude’s was a blur of high-speed turns, sirens howling through the drenched midnight streets. When we arrived, the hospital perimeter was already crawling with squad cars. Red emergency beacons painted the white brick facade in bleeding hues.

We rushed through the automatic doors into the lobby. Security guards were yelling, hospital personnel were huddled behind the triage desks, and an alarm was chiming persistently over the intercom: *Security lockdown, Sector 3.*

We took the emergency stairs two at a time, bursting onto the third-floor intensive care wing.

Down the long, sterile white hallway, the door to Paige's room was wide open. The heart monitor inside was flatlining with a high-pitched, continuous beep.

"Paige!" I cried out.

Two nurses were frantically running inside with a crash cart. Vance drew his gun, advancing down the corridor with tactical precision.

Suddenly, a figure in light blue scrubs and a surgical mask stepped out of an adjacent utility closet, carrying a black medical waste bag. He paused, locking eyes with me.

Even behind the sterile blue paper mask and plastic goggles, I recognized those hazel eyes.

May you like

"Graham," I choked out.
