Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Curtain

The room fell deadly silent except for the crackle of the fireplace and the drumming of the mountain storm.

Detective Vance raised the suppressed barrel toward my forehead. His finger tightened on the trigger.

"Wait," Julian commanded softly, holding up a gloved hand.

Marcus Vance paused, the gun steady. "Grandfather, we can't leave her alive. The registry closes at sunrise."

Julian ignored him and took two slow, measured steps toward me. He reached into his heavy overcoat pocket and pulled out a faded, yellowed photograph, tossing it onto the table between us.

I glanced down.

The photograph was thirty-five years old. It showed three young men standing proudly on the peak of Blackwood Ridge, holding the original survey map.

One was my father.

The second was Julian.

And the third man... was someone whose face stopped the breath in my throat.

He had the exact same jawline, the exact same piercing hazel eyes, and the same slight scar above his left eyebrow as Graham.

"You think Graham was just a hired gun from BioPath?" Julian asked, his voice low and vibrating with a terrifying secret. "Graham wasn't some random stranger who stumbled into your life, Elena. He was my son. Marcus's uncle."

The room seemed to violently tilt on its axis.

"You... you had your own grandson shoot your son?" I gasped, looking at Graham’s lifeless body on the floor.

"Blood is secondary to the empire," Julian whispered coldly. "Graham was weak. He gambled away our collateral. He botched your execution. He nearly exposed Marcus. In our world, Elena, failure carries a mandatory sentence."

Julian stepped even closer, his eyes boring into mine with a chilling intensity that was worse than any gun.

"Your father thought he killed me thirty years ago when he pushed me off the ridge overlook," Julian continued, lifting his chin to reveal a horrific, jagged surgical scar running from his ear down into his collarbone. "I survived. I spent three decades rebuilding my syndicate. I sent my son to marry you. And now, the circle closes."

"Then shoot me," I snarled, refusing to give him the satisfaction of tears. "End it. Because if you don't, I will tear down everything you built until you die in a concrete cage."

Julian let out a dry, raspy chuckle that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"Shoot you? Oh no, Elena. Killing you now would be a tragic waste of your bloodline."

He motioned to the tactical officers behind him.

"Tie her to the chair," Julian instructed calmly as he turned toward the door. "Bring the biometric scanner from the van. Marcus, call the private clinic in Zurich. Tell them we have the living genetic host. Her father’s vault was never secured by a legal deed. It was sealed with a DNA sequence."

Before the guards could grab my arms, the cabin’s power suddenly cut out entirely, plunging the room into pitch-black darkness.

Outside in the woods, a deafening blast shattered the mountain silence.

The perimeter floodlights of the black SUVs exploded in a shower of sparks, followed immediately by the unmistakable, thunderous roar of a heavy caliber sniper rifle cracking through the storm—tearing through the cabin wall and dropping the tactical officer nearest to me.

Through the pitch-black chaos, a distorted voice echoed from an external tactical loudspeaker hidden in the pines:

*"Marcus Vance! Drop your weapon! You are surrounded by Federal Marshals and the Department of Homeland Security Special Operations Unit! Step away from Elena Calder immediately!"*

Marcus cursed in the darkness, firing blindly out the window as glass shattered in every direction.

In the sudden flash of muzzle fire, I saw my opening. I threw my entire weight against the back window, bursting through the glass into the freezing, torrential darkness of the woods.

I hit the mud rolling, shards of glass slicing into my skin, but I didn't stop. I scrambled to my feet and ran blindly into the black labyrinth of Blackwood Ridge.

Behind me, automatic gunfire erupted inside the cabin, lighting up the timber frame in strobes of death.

And as I sprinted through the pouring rain, my hand brushed against my jacket pocket.

Inside was something I hadn't realized I grabbed when I knocked Graham's lockbox open during our fight:

A rusted brass key stamped with a series of coordinates, and a handwritten note from my dead father that read:

*Elena—if you are reading this, Julian has returned. Do not trust the federal agents. The man leading them is the one who ordered the hit on me.*
