Chapter 7 - The Taste of Ash

They returned to the estate as the afternoon fog thickened into a dull, gray haze.

Elena retreated to the library—a massive two-story room lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes. Luca had not restricted her movement within the house, confident in the layers of security surrounding the perimeter.

She walked aimlessly along the shelves, her fingers trailing over titles she couldn't read. Her mind was trapped in the charred ruins of Warehouse 14. She couldn't unsee the blackened vault door. She couldn't unhear her father's cold, calculating voice offering five million dollars like he was haggling for an antique chair.

*You were the bow tied around the coffin.*

A soft click caught her attention.

Near the back of the library, behind a spiral staircase, a heavy mahogany door stood slightly ajar. Elena glanced toward the hallway. The guards were posted at the main entrance, out of sight.

Slipping silently across the parquet floor, she pushed the door open.

It was a private study, much darker and colder than the rest of the house. On the desk lay three open laptops, displaying live camera feeds, stock tickers, and tactical satellite maps. Beside them sat a half-unpacked duffel bag.

Elena’s breath hitched. Peeking out from the bag was a silver-plated satellite phone and a set of car keys with a Mercedes fob.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

An escape.

If she could get to the garage, if she could just call someone—not her father, but her aunt, or a lawyer, or...

Her fingers reached for the phone.

"I wouldn't touch that."

Elena spun around, her spine hitting the edge of the heavy desk.

Luca stood in the doorway, leaning against the jamb with his arms crossed over his chest. He wasn't holding a weapon, but his presence was suffocating. He moved like a predator that didn't need to hurry because its prey had nowhere to go.

"I... I was looking for a book," she lied, her voice cracking.

"In my private office?" Luca stepped inside, closing the door behind him with a soft, ominous thud. He walked slowly toward her until he was standing just inches away. She could smell the crisp autumn air clinging to his sweater, the dark undertone of tobacco.

"You're a terrible liar, Elena. Unlike your father, the deceit doesn't come naturally to you."

"Let me go, Luca," she whispered, her chin lifting in desperate defiance. "If you hate my father, go after him! Leave me out of this. I didn't burn that warehouse. I didn't steal your money!"

"You lived on it," he countered, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register. He stepped closer, crowding her against the desk until she had to lean back to maintain space between them. "Every sip of vintage wine. Every diamond around your throat. Every single privilege you enjoyed was purchased with the ashes of my brother."

"I didn't know!" she cried, tears spilling over her lashes. "Do you think I wanted this? Do you think I wanted to wake up today knowing my entire life was a lie? Knowing that my father sold me out for a discount?"

Luca stared down at her, his amber eyes darkening. His hand rose, and for a terrifying second, she thought he was going to strike her.

Instead, his thumb brushed against her cheekbone, catching a warm tear before it fell. His touch was rough, calloused from years of violence, yet unexpectedly gentle.

"No," he said, his voice husky. "I don't think you wanted this. That’s the tragedy of you, Elena."

Elena’s breath hitched. The air between them suddenly turned thick, charged with a strange, dark electricity that terrified her more than his threats. She looked into his eyes and saw a bottomless well of vengeance, but beneath it lay a grief that mirrored her own shattered soul.

"Then let me help you," she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.

Luca tilted his head, his thumb lingering against the soft curve of her jaw. "Help me do what?"

"Help you destroy him."
