Chapter 3 - The Receipts of a Ghost

"I’m not undressing for you," Elena said, her voice shaking with defiance even as her legs trembled.
Luca sighed, running a hand through his rain-dampened dark hair. "I have no interest in touching you, little Voss. But if you want to freeze in a dead man's blood, that's your choice." He turned to a guard standing by the hall. "Bring a robe and clean clothes. Female. Small."
The guard nodded and vanished.
Elena stood frozen in the middle of the room. Her teeth chattered. "You're insane. My father will call every federal agent, every governor, every judge in this state. You won’t survive until morning."
Luca let out a short, dry laugh. It was a terrifying sound—completely devoid of humor. He walked over to a low mahogany desk, opened a leather folder, and pulled out a stack of documents.
"Federal agents?" Luca asked, tossing the files onto the glass coffee table in front of her. They slid across the surface, landing right at the hem of her ruined gown. "Your father hasn't called the police in thirty years, Elena. Do you know why?"
"Because he's a private businessman!"
"Because he’s a thief." Luca stepped forward until he was towering over her. "Six years ago, Robert Voss was the chief financial officer for my family's port operations in Newark. When my father was assassinated by the Russian syndicate, your father didn't mourn. He didn't even run. He waited until the chaos hit its peak, drained eighteen million dollars from the offshore accounts, and routed the money through twelve shell companies."
Elena shook her head frantically. "No. My father founded Voss Capital with his own savings. He built our family from nothing!"
"Look at the papers, Elena." Luca’s voice dropped, terrifyingly calm. "Look at them."
Trembling, Elena fell to her knees, heedless of the satin pooling around her. Her hands shook as she turned the first page. It was a wire transfer dated six years ago from an account named *Tartaglia Maritime* into an offshore holding company called *Aegis Holdings*.
Beneath it was another document: a receipt for four million dollars transferred from Aegis Holdings to a trust fund under the name *Elena Voss*.
The dates lined up. The year she was sent to Le Rosey in Switzerland. The year her father bought the penthouse on 5th Avenue. The year she got her first diamond necklace for her eighteenth birthday.
"He didn't just steal money," Luca whispered, crouching down so his face was level with hers. "Three of my men guarded the vault where that cash was held. Your father didn't just transfer the funds. He locked the doors from the outside and set the warehouse on fire to burn the paper trails. He burned three eighteen-year-old boys alive."
Elena stared at the documents, her vision blurring with tears. "No... no, this is fabricated. You made this."
"Michael knew," Luca continued relentlessly, his eyes boring into hers. "Michael's father was the banker who cleaned the cash. The wedding wasn't about love, Elena. It was a merger to permanently seal the stolen fortune so I could never claw it back through legal or illegal channels."

Elena choked on a sob, clutching the papers to her chest. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I want you to understand," Luca said, his fingers gently brushing a tear from her cheek with terrifying tenderness, "that every dress you ever wore, every luxury you ever took for granted, was paid for with my blood. And now, the bill has come due."
