Chapter 11 - The Vault of Judas

Forty-eight hours later, the rain returned to Manhattan, washing the neon-lit streets in greasy reflections of red and blue.

The subterranean level of the Manhattan Depository was silent as a tomb. Built thirty feet below sea level, surrounded by four-foot-thick steel-reinforced concrete, the private vault room was impenetrable to the outside world.

Elena walked down the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridor, her heels clicking rhythmically against the white tile. She wore a sharp black tailored suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, sleek bun. Beside her walked Luca, his wounded shoulder tightly bound beneath a dark Italian wool coat, a suppressed Glock concealed beneath his lapel.

Behind them, the depository's night guard lay unconscious in the security booth, his monitors looped on a pre-recorded feed.

"This is it," Elena said, stopping before a massive circular titanium door marked *Vault 404*.

"Are you sure about this?" Luca asked quietly, his eyes scanning the empty hallway. "Once this door opens, there is no turning back, Elena. You cross this line, you are dead to the civilized world."

Elena looked at him. There was no hesitation left in her eyes. "I died at the altar, Luca. Let's finish it."

She stepped up to the terminal. She pressed her right thumb against the optical scanner. A green light flashed.

*BEEP.*

Next, she leaned in, aligning her eye with the retinal camera. A sharp red beam swept across her pupil.

*IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELENA VOSS. ACCESS GRANTED.*

A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the reinforced chamber as three hydraulic deadbolts withdrew. The air pressure shifted with a low hiss, and the massive bank vault door slowly swung open, revealing the dark, cavernous room inside.

Luca drew his suppressed pistol, stepping in first to clear the space. Elena followed close behind, her heart hammering against her ribs.

The lights inside flickered on automatically.

Rows of steel safety deposit boxes lined the walls, and in the center of the room sat four heavy titanium transport cases—presumably filled with the sixty million in bearer bonds and diamonds.

But the room wasn't empty.

Sitting casually in a high-backed leather chair at the far end of the vault, sipping a tumbler of single-malt scotch, was Robert Voss.

He didn't look surprised. He didn't look afraid. He wore a crisp Tom Ford suit, a subtle smirk playing on his lips as he looked past Luca’s raised gun directly at his daughter.

"I knew you'd come here, Elena," Robert said smoothly. "I always knew you were cleverer than you let on."

"Drop the glass, Robert," Luca snarled, raising his weapon, aiming dead center at the older man's forehead. "You're out of moves."

Robert didn't flinch. He didn't even put down his drink.

"Am I, Luca?" Robert chuckled softly.

From the shadows behind the vault's massive support pillars, the sharp click of three dozen assault rifles echoed simultaneously in the enclosed space.

Stepping out from behind the steel columns was not a squad of Russian mercenaries, nor was it Voss’s private security.

Leading the armed unit was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a pristine gray tuxedo, his shoulder wrapped in heavy white medical gauze where a bullet had passed through days ago, a cold, mocking smile plastered across his face.

Elena’s blood turned to ice. Her breath caught in her throat, her entire world tilting on its axis.

"Michael?" she whispered in absolute horror.

The groom she had watched die at the altar—the man whose blood was supposed to have stained her wedding gown—lowered his assault rifle, his eyes locking onto Elena with sadistic amusement.

"Did you really think blank rounds and stage blood were that hard to pull off in a dark cathedral, sweetheart?" Michael smiled, his voice sending a wave of nausea crashing through her.

Behind them, with a deafening, thunderous slam, the heavy titanium vault door swung shut. The hydraulic locks engaged with a final, inescapable click, sealing the three of them inside the concrete tomb.

Robert Voss took a slow sip of his scotch and raised a detonator in his left hand.

"Welcome to your real wedding, Elena," Robert whispered.
