Chapter 7 - The Trap is Sprung

The black Maybach sat idling on the muddy shoulder of the private mountain road, sheltered beneath the thick canopy of weeping hemlocks.

Inside the heated luxury cabin, Julian Croft checked his platinum wristwatch: 12:18 AM.

The estate above was quiet now. From this distance, he could see smoke rising from the conservatory terrace where a small fire had broken out from the flashbangs. No police sirens echoed in the valley; his electronic jammers were still blanketing the area.

His phone buzzed. Julian answered instantly. "Is it done?"

Static crackled on the line, followed by a low, gravelly voice. "We breached the upper level. Heavy resistance from the female operative. Both scout teams are non-responsive."

Julian slammed his fist against the leather armrest. "You had six men! She is one woman protecting an unarmed executive and a crippled child! Finish it, or you don't get the remaining half-million wire!"

"We have them pinned on the north cliffside trail," the voice replied. "They have nowhere to run. Moving in for the kill now."

Julian ended the call and let out a long, tense breath. He adjusted his silk tie, reached into his briefcase, and pulled out the forged emergency proxy documents. By sunrise, once the bodies were discovered, he would present Sabrina’s signed confession to the board, lament Ethan’s tragic demise at the hands of an unstable fiancé's hired thugs, and assume full emergency chairmanship of Sinclair Enterprises.

*Thump.*

A heavy impact shook the roof of the Maybach.

Julian froze. His driver, a hulking ex-mercenary with a scarred neck, drew his pistol instantly, his eyes darting to the moonroof.

"What was that?" Julian hissed.

Before the driver could answer, the driver’s side window shattered inward in an explosion of tempered safety glass.

A gloved hand reached through the opening, seized the driver by the collar of his suit, and slammed his head violently against the steering wheel. The driver went limp instantly, the car horn blaring a single, loud blast before the hand reached inside, unlocked the door, and shoved the unconscious man out into the mud.

Claire Reyes slid smoothly into the driver’s seat.

She turned around, the muzzle of her dripping-wet Glock pointing directly between Julian Croft’s eyes.

Julian’s face drained of every ounce of blood. His sleek, aristocratic composure shattered like cheap glass. "R-Reyes..."

The rear passenger door clicked open.

Ethan stepped inside the dry interior of the luxury vehicle. His tuxedo was torn and covered in mud, his face smeared with soot, but his eyes were burning with an intensity so terrifying that Julian involuntarily pressed his back against the opposite door.

Behind Ethan stood Mia, wrapped in Claire’s dry tactical jacket, holding her teddy bear tightly. She didn't look terrified anymore. She looked at Julian Croft with the clear, unclouded gaze of an accuser.

"Hello, Julian," Ethan said, his voice softer than a whisper, yet carrying the weight of a death sentence.

"Ethan... Ethan, thank God you're alive!" Julian sputtered, desperately trying to reassemble his mask of innocence. "I saw the smoke from the highway! I was driving up to help—I called the authorities—"

Claire reached over the leather console and picked up the burner phone sitting in Julian’s lap. She pressed redial and held it up to her ear.

Ten feet away in the rainy woods, a muffled ringtone echoed from the pocket of a fallen mercenary who lay tied to a tree trunk.

Claire hung up the phone and looked back at Julian with cold amusement. "Your tactical team surrendered five minutes ago, Mr. Croft. Turns out, foreign mercenaries aren't very loyal once their team leader takes a bullet to the kneecap. They gave us your encrypted satellite coordinates, the Swiss transfer receipts, and the audio files of your phone calls from tonight."

Julian stared at the phone, then at Claire, and finally at Ethan. The walls of his carefully constructed empire were crumbling around him in real time.

"Ethan... listen to me," Julian begged, his hands trembling as he raised them in surrender. "It was Sabrina's idea from the start! She approached me! She knew Elena was investigating our offshore accounts! If Elena had gone to the SEC, the entire company would have collapsed! I was trying to protect what we built!"

"You killed my sister," Ethan said, leaning forward until his face was inches from Julian's. "You had a tracking device placed on her car. You cut her brake lines. And then you tried to poison an innocent seven-year-old child so you could steal her inheritance."

"I have fifty million dollars in a blind trust in Zurich!" Julian cried out, completely breaking down into pathetic, groveling desperation. "I can transfer it to you tonight! Every cent! Just let me take the car to the airstrip. Tell the police Sabrina hired the hitmen! You get the company, you get the money, and nobody has to know the Sinclair name was dragged through this mud!"

Ethan looked at Julian with an expression of profound, unadulterated disgust.

"My sister's life wasn't for sale, Julian," Ethan whispered. "And neither is my niece's future."

Ethan turned his head toward the front seat. "Claire. Do we have everything we need for the Department of Justice?"

Claire held up a sleek thumb drive, flashing a predatory grin. "Every communication between Croft, Sabrina, and the dark-web brokerage is mirrored on this drive. Federal marshals and the state police tactical unit are currently pulling into the main estate gates."

Julian collapsed into the corner of the leather seat, his face gray, his eyes wide and vacant as he realized his life was completely, irrevocably over.

From the backseat doorway, little Mia stepped forward. She looked at the man who had ordered the murder of her mother.

"You're a bad man," Mia said, her voice clear, steady, and without a single tremor. "And Mommy knew you were a thief."

Sirens suddenly split the night air.

Dozens of red and blue emergency lights crested the hill, sweeping through the rainy pines, illuminating the black Maybach in a glaring, blinding halo of justice.
