Chapter 4 - The Web of Greed

The clock on the wall of county lockup showed 11:42 PM.

Sabrina Vance sat on a metal bench inside an interrogation room, her ruined champagne dress replaced by an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. Her diamond rings had been confiscated, her golden hair fell in greasy strands around her pale face, and her manicured nails were bitten down to the quick.

The heavy steel door buzzed and swung open.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked in, carrying an expensive leather briefcase. He had slicked-back silver hair, cold gray eyes, and an aura of polished, aristocratic ruthlessness. Julian Croft didn't look like a killer; he looked like a man who signed billion-dollar merger agreements before lunch.

He set the briefcase on the metal table and sat down across from her. He didn't look at her with sympathy. He looked at her like a spreadsheet error that needed to be erased.

"You idiot," Julian whispered.

Sabrina jumped up, rattling the handcuffs securing her wrists to the table ring. "Julian! Get me out of here! You have to post my bail! The judge set it at two million dollars! You promised me if anything went wrong—"

"Keep your voice down," Julian snapped, his eyes flashing with lethal venom. "Every wall in this building has ears."

"I don't care!" Sabrina sobbed, panic clawing at her throat. "Ethan knows! The maid—she wasn't a maid, Julian! She was a federal investigator! She had cameras! She knows about the neurotoxin, she knows about the dosage schedules—"

"The maid is Claire Reyes," Julian said coldly, leaning forward. "I already ran her background through my private contacts. She's former Defense Intelligence. Elena hired her before we cut the brake lines on the SUV."

Sabrina gasped, slapping her chained hands over her mouth. "Don't say that out loud!"

"Nobody is listening right now; I had my security team sweep the room before the sheriff let me in," Julian said, his voice flat and emotionless. "What matters is what you told Ethan."

"I... I panicked," Sabrina stammered, sweat beading on her forehead. "I mentioned your name. I told him you set it up."

Julian didn't blink. A terrible, hollow silence filled the small room.

"Julian, please," Sabrina cried, sensing the sudden, predatory chill in the air. "I only said it because I was terrified! But I didn't give them the offshore account numbers! I didn't tell them about the Cayman shell corporation! If you get me out on bail tonight, I can take the private jet to Switzerland. I'll disappear! I'll never mention your name again!"

Julian opened his briefcase with two sharp clicks. He didn't pull out bail bonds or release papers. He pulled out a single legal document and a sleek, silver fountain pen.

"Your bail has already been wired through an anonymous shell corporation in Panama," Julian said smoothly. "You will be processed and released through the rear sally port at precisely 2:00 AM."

Sabrina let out a gasp of euphoric relief. "Thank God! Oh, Julian, thank you—"

"Sign this first," Julian said, sliding the document across the table.

Sabrina looked down at the paper through tear-blurred eyes. "What is it?"

"A full, unilateral confession," Julian said softly. "Stating that you acted entirely alone out of pathological jealousy toward Elena Sinclair's memory and greed for the Sinclair family fortune. Stating that you purchased the Compound 48-B through dark-web contacts without the knowledge or assistance of anyone at Sinclair Enterprises."

Sabrina recoiled, her chains clinking against the steel table. "No! If I sign this, I'm taking the fall for everything! The police will hunt me down! What happens to my cut of Elena's shares?"

Julian leaned in closer, his gray eyes dead and unblinking. "There is no cut for you anymore, Sabrina. You failed the execution. You allowed a seven-year-old child and a hired gun to dismantle eight months of planning in thirty seconds."

He tapped the pen against the paper.

"You sign this confession. You take the jet waiting at the private airstrip in Teterboro. You live comfortably under an assumed identity in a villa in Montenegro. Or... you refuse to sign. I cancel the bail wire. And within forty-eight hours, you will suffer a fatal allergic reaction to prison food before your preliminary hearing."

Sabrina stared at him, realizing with absolute, horrifying clarity that she was dealing with a monster far more vicious than herself. Her trembling fingers reached for the silver pen.

With shaky strokes, she signed her name at the bottom of the confession.

Julian blew gently on the ink, inspected the signature with clinical satisfaction, and placed it neatly back into his briefcase. He closed the latches with two crisp snaps.

"Good girl," Julian said, standing up. "A town car will be waiting for you outside the sally port at two."

"Are you... are you really sending me to Montenegro?" Sabrina whispered, her voice cracking with dread.

Julian smiled—a cold, empty baring of white teeth. "Of course, Sabrina. I always tie up my loose ends."

He knocked on the heavy steel door. The guard unlocked it from the outside, and Julian stepped out into the fluorescent-lit corridor, leaving the fallen socialite alone in the cold.

Twenty minutes later, Julian was sitting in the back of his black Mercedes Maybach, rolling smoothly down the highway away from the county lockup. He pulled out a disposable burner phone and dialed a ten-digit number from memory.

"It's Croft," Julian said the moment the line clicked open.

"We're listening," a harsh, accented voice replied from the other end.

"The girl spoke," Julian said, staring out the tinted window into the rainy night. "The wedding gambit is burned. Ethan has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning to launch an internal audit. He’s hired Claire Reyes to run security."

"Reyes is dangerous," the voice on the other end responded. "She eliminated four of our contractors in Vienna three years ago."

"I don't care about her pedigree," Julian hissed. "Sabrina signed the confession, which will buy us twenty-four hours of legal distraction. But Ethan must not reach that boardroom tomorrow. And more importantly... the girl cannot survive to take the witness stand."

"What are your orders?"

Julian rolled down the window slightly, letting the cold night wind whip across his face.

"Hit the estate tonight. Burn it to the ground. Kill Ethan, kill the investigator, and ensure Mia Sinclair never wakes up. I want Sinclair Enterprises in full probate by sunrise."
