Chapter 9 - The Public Reckoning

By Friday morning, the fall of the Sterling family was the only story anyone was talking about across the entire Midwest.

The viral video of Daniel dragging me across the dining room by my hair at his birthday party had been anonymously leaked to every major social media platform. Within six hours, it had amassed over forty million views. The hashtags #JusticeForNora and #BoycottSterling were trending worldwide.

Every news network, from local affiliates to national morning shows, ran the footage alongside aerial shots of Daniel Sterling being hauled out of the Oakridge estate in zip-ties for attempted murder, home invasion, and drug trafficking charges.

The country club where Lorraine had reigned as queen for three decades held an emergency board meeting at dawn and unanimously revoked the memberships of both mother and son, stripping their names from the donor plaques before lunch.

At noon, I stepped into the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel for my first official press conference as the confirmed CEO and majority shareholder of Vanguard Logistics.

The room was blinding with camera flashes. Over a hundred journalists and financial analysts packed the floor, their microphones clustered thickly on the podium bearing the Vanguard crest.

I walked to the lectern dressed in a midnight-blue suit, calm, poised, and utterly untouchable. Evelyn Price stood at the edge of the stage, watching me with quiet, fierce pride.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice carrying clearly through the massive speakers without a single tremor. "For forty years, Vanguard Logistics was built on the integrity and labor of thousands of dedicated men and women. In recent years, that legacy was hijacked by greed, entitlement, and cruelty."

The room was so quiet you could hear the shutter clicks of the cameras.

"Today, Daniel Sterling and Lorraine Sterling have been permanently removed from all corporate affiliations," I continued. "The criminal justice system will handle their actions behind closed doors. But under my leadership, Vanguard Logistics will not hide its past. We will face it."

I announced a forty-million-dollar internal restructuring, the preservation of every single operational job threatened by Daniel's reckless merger, and the creation of a ten-million-dollar foundation dedicated to providing legal and financial resources for survivors of domestic abuse.

"For too long," I said, looking straight into the camera lens that I knew was broadcasting into the common room of the Cook County detention facility where Daniel was currently sitting, "abusers have relied on silence, wealth, and fear to maintain their cages. But cages are built to be broken."

The press conference erupted into a standing ovation—a rare, unprecedented reaction from seasoned financial reporters.

When I stepped off the stage, Evelyn handed me a glass of sparkling water, a brilliant grin stretching across her face. "The stock surged fourteen percent within the last thirty minutes, Nora. You didn't just survive them. You conquered them."

"Not yet," I replied, setting the glass down. "There is still one piece of the puzzle Arthur left unresolved."
