Chapter 6 - Eviction Notice

When Lorraine’s private towncar pulled up to the Oakridge estate forty minutes later, she found two massive moving vans parked across the circular driveway, their hazard lights blinking lazily in the rain.

Six professional movers in navy blue jumpsuits were already carrying antique armoires, rolled Persian rugs, and mahogany side tables out through the grand entrance. Standing on the covered portico, clipboard in hand, was a certified county sheriff's deputy alongside Evelyn Price’s junior associate.

Lorraine threw her car door open, abandoning all pretense of elegance as she marched up the stone steps, her diamond heels splashing through muddy puddles.

"Stop! Stop this immediately!" she shrieked at the movers, waving her umbrella like a sword. "Put that furniture down! That is an authentic eighteenth-century French console! Who authorized you to touch my property?"

The deputy stepped forward, adjusting his utility belt. "Ma'am, step back. Are you Lorraine Sterling?"

"Of course I am Lorraine Sterling! I am the mistress of this house!"

"Not anymore, ma'am," the deputy replied evenly, handing her a sealed white envelope. "This is an emergency order of possession granted by Judge Morrison at eleven o'clock this morning. The residential trust governing this property has been transferred to the sole ownership of Nora Sterling. You and your son have been formally served with an immediate eviction notice."

Lorraine tore open the envelope, her manicured hands shaking violently. She scanned the legal document, her face draining of color until she looked like a ghost standing in the damp morning air.

"This is Arthur’s house!" she screamed. "Arthur built this estate for me!"

"Arthur built this estate with trust funds held exclusively under the Sterling Maritime Holdings banner," I said, stepping through the front doorway onto the portico. I had traded my tailored blazer for a simple cashmere sweater, but the authority in my posture made Lorraine stumble back half a step. "A company of which I am now the primary managing director. You have no lease, Lorraine. You have no equity. You are an unauthorized guest whose welcome has expired."

Daniel’s cab pulled into the driveway at that exact moment. He tumbled out of the back seat, his tie gone, his shirt unbuttoned, his face wild with panic.

"Mother!" Daniel yelled, running up the stone steps. "The banks won't talk to me! Every single card was declined at the hotel downtown! What is happening?"

He stopped abruptly when he saw the movers carrying his custom leather luggage down the steps and stacking it onto the gravel drive.

"What is this?" Daniel demanded, rounding on me with bare teeth. "You're throwing my clothes in the dirt?"

"Your clothes are packed in the suitcases your father bought you," I replied calmly. "Your watches, your golf clubs, and your personal electronics are on the lawn. Anything purchased with corporate funds after Arthur’s death remains inside the house pending the forensic audit."

"You can't kick us out of our own home!" Daniel yelled, turning to the deputy. "Officer, arrest this woman! She’s trespassing! This is my house!"

"Mr. Sterling," the deputy said, placing a heavy hand on his taser holster. "The deed is registered exclusively to Mrs. Nora Sterling. If you cross the threshold of that front door, I will arrest you for criminal trespass and felony violation of the restraining order that was filed two hours ago."

"Restraining order?" Daniel choked.

"You have twenty minutes to collect the personal effects currently on the driveway and vacate the premises," the deputy said coldly. "If you are still on this property at twelve-fifteen, you will spend the night in Cook County jail."

Lorraine grabbed Daniel’s arm, her voice rising in a shrill, manic panic. "Daniel, call your uncle Robert! Call Judge Hastings! Call anyone who owes your father a favor!"

"I already called them, Mother!" Daniel cried, his voice cracking like a terrified child’s. "Nobody is answering my calls! Hastings’ secretary told me he was out of the country, and Robert told me never to contact his family again after the board leaked the assault video!"

The reality crashed down on both of them like a collapsing ceiling.

The network of corrupt elites, country club buddies, and spineless relatives who had laughed while Daniel dragged me by my hair forty-eight hours ago had vanished overnight. In high society, abuse could be swept under the rug, but public financial fraud, frozen assets, and the loss of the Sterling family voting bloc were unforgivable sins. They were pariahs.

Rain began to pour harder, soaking through Daniel’s expensive wool trousers and Lorraine’s chinchilla coat.

"Nora..." Lorraine whispered, turning toward me with tears finally leaking through her thick mascara. She took a step toward the porch, her hands clasped in front of her chest in a grotesque parody of prayer. "Nora, please. Think of Arthur. Arthur wouldn't want to see his family on the street. Where are we supposed to go? We don't have anywhere to sleep tonight!"

I looked down at the woman who had spent four years making sure I knew I was unworthy to breathe the same air as her son. I remembered the red marks on my scalp, the mocking laughter of the dining room, and the dozens of times she had watched Daniel humiliate me without blinking.

"Family requires sacrifice, Lorraine," I said, repeating her exact words back to her with a smile that was colder than the falling rain. "You taught me that yourself."

I turned on my heel, walked back into the warmth of the grand foyer, and closed the heavy oak doors firmly in their faces.
