Chapter 9 - THE REBUILDING

One year later.
The morning breeze off the Hudson River was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of fresh water into the top-floor office of VANCE & ASSOCIATES FORENSIC ACCOUNTING.
The office was bright, filled with modern wood desks, glowing dual-monitor setups, and a team of fifteen sharp young accountants reviewing financial ledgers for state agencies and non-profit organizations.
Rebecca stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out over the shimmering city skyline.
The glass door opened, and Tyler walked in, wearing a neat tailored blue suit and carrying a stack of audit files. He looked healthy, his skin clear, his smile genuine and confident.
“Morning, Boss,” Tyler said with a grin, setting the files on Rebecca’s desk. “The state infrastructure department just approved our contract for the new city library project. We’re officially the lead auditing firm.”
Rebecca turned around, a bright, warm smile spreading across her face. “That’s fantastic news, Tyler. Great work on the preliminary presentation.”
“Couldn't have done it without my mentor,” Tyler said warmly, leaning against the desk. “By the way... Detective Reed called. He said the state transit project was officially reopened this morning. They’re using the recovered funds from Dad’s accounts to finish the transit center.”
Rebecca looked at her brother, a feeling of deep, profound peace settling over her heart. The money that had once been stolen to build a toxic family fortress was finally going where it belonged—to the people who needed it.
“That’s how it should be,” Rebecca said softly.

“Are you ready for lunch?” Tyler asked, gesturing toward the door. “My treat. I actually have an audited paycheck this time.”
Rebecca laughed—a light, free sound that resonated through the bright office. “Lead the way, Tyler.”
