Chapter 4 - The Soho Confrontation

The Soho condo was sleek, modern, and expensive—exactly the kind of place a thirty-four-year-old man buys when he wants to feel like a twenty-something bachelor again.

At 2:00 PM, I knocked on the door of Apartment 4B.

A young woman answered. She had long blonde hair, was wearing an oversized cashmere sweater, and held her hand gently over her slightly rounded stomach.

This was Chloe Miller—Daniel’s senior research analyst, and the woman from the ultrasound picture.

When she saw me standing in the hallway—my dark sunglasses hiding my eyes, but the dark purple bruise clearly visible on my jaw—she froze.

“Evelyn?” she whispered, her face going pale.

“Hello, Chloe,” I said, keeping my hands folded in my coat pockets. “May I come in?”

She hesitated, looking around the hallway nervously, before stepping back to let me enter.

The apartment was filled with unpacked boxes, expensive wine bottles, and fresh flowers. On the dining table sat a framed ultrasound photo alongside a blue velvet box from Tiffany & Co.

“I... I heard what happened last night,” Chloe stammered, her voice trembling as she backed toward the kitchen counter. “Daniel’s lawyer called me from the precinct this morning. He said you had him arrested...”

“He hit me, Chloe,” I said plainly, taking off my sunglasses so she could see the full extent of the damage. “He broke two of my ribs because I saw your text message on his phone.”

Chloe gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. Tears immediately filled her eyes. “Oh my God... he told me... he told me you guys were practically divorced! He said you were emotionally abusive to him, that you controlled all his money...”

I let out a cold, bitter laugh. “Controlled his money? Chloe, Daniel didn't have any money. The money funding your luxury rent, that cashmere sweater, and the Tiffany ring sitting on that table came directly from my private investment firm.”

Chloe shook her head frantically. “No... no, Daniel is the CEO of Sterling Global! He’s managing fifty million dollars in assets!”

“Forty-eight million of those assets belong to my clients,” I corrected her, setting a legal notice on the counter between us. “And as of 11:00 AM today, I executed a formal recall on my two-million-dollar anchor loan. The SEC has froze Sterling Global’s accounts. The lease on this apartment has been terminated for corporate fraud.”

Chloe stared at the document, her hands shaking violently. “What... what does that mean?”

“It means you have until Friday to vacate this property,” I said gently, looking at her belly. “Chloe, I didn't come here to ruin your life. You are young, and Daniel lied to you just like he lied to me. He promised you a fairy-tale life built on a foundation he stole from another woman.”

Chloe collapsed into a kitchen stool, burying her face in her hands, weeping loudly. “He told me he was going to leave you after the firm went public... he said we were going to buy a house in the Hamptons...”

“He doesn't have a firm anymore, Chloe,” I said softly, stepping toward the door. “And by Monday morning, he won't have his freedom either. If you have any sense, you’ll hire a good lawyer, cooperate with the SEC audit, and get as far away from Daniel and Gloria Sterling as you possibly can.”

I opened the front door, pausing on the threshold.

“The ultrasound photo is pretty,” I added, looking back at her. “Just remember—a man who beats his wife because his lies were exposed will never be a father worth having.”

I closed the door, leaving her weeping in the silence of the apartment she would have to abandon by Friday.
