Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominoes

By Wednesday, the news had shattered the financial world.

ADRIAN VANE OUSTED FROM MERIDIAN GLOBAL AMID MASSIVE FRAUD PROBE. CELESTE ROUX TERMINATES ENGAGEMENT, ISSUES PUBLIC APOLOGY. STOCK REBOUNDS AS FOUNDER EVELYN REED ASSUMES BOARD ADVISORY ROLE.

From my Whidbey Island sanctuary, I watched the dominos fall with astonishing speed.

Celeste Roux’s public relations team held a press conference announcing that the singer had been completely unaware of Mr. Vane’s legal fabrications and personal conduct, officially severing all personal and commercial ties with him. Within forty-eight hours, she had deleted every photo of Adrian from her social media accounts and scrubbed his name from her foundation’s donor list.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors executed a search warrant on Adrian’s Manhattan penthouse and his private office. The discovery of hidden off-shore accounts used to funnel money for the forged settlement team led to additional charges of money laundering and bank fraud.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Naomi drove out to Whidbey Island carrying a stack of final settlement documents.

We sat by the fireplace, drinking warm tea while the sound of falling rain tapped softly against the glass windows.

“Adrian’s personal legal team tried to file an emergency bail application this morning,” Naomi reported, setting the papers on the table. “The judge set bail at five million dollars cash, but frozen assets mean he’s having trouble liquidating property to raise it. He’s currently staying at a small hotel in New Jersey, surrounded by process servers.”

“Has he surrendered his personal shares to the children’s trust?” I asked.

“Signed an hour ago,” Naomi handed me the deed of transfer. “His criminal defense attorneys advised him that executing the equity transfer was his only chance at showing remorse before sentencing. The twins now hold the single largest voting bloc in Meridian Global, worth approximately three billion dollars.”

I looked down at the document. The name on the trust read: The Eleanor and Clara Reed Trust.

“Eleanor and Clara?” Naomi smiled gently.

“My grandmother and my mother,” I said softly, feeling a sudden, deep sense of peace settle over my chest. “Names built on integrity, not vanity.”

“And what about Meridian Pulse?” Naomi asked. “The board wants you to take over as Chief Technology Officer. They offered a package that would make you one of the highest-paid female executives in tech history.”

I looked out at the mist rising over the Puget Sound. The quiet beauty of the forest, the cool air, and the safety of the cottage had given me something no corporate salary could ever buy.

“Tell them I will serve as Chief Architecture Advisor from Whidbey Island,” I decided. “I will review core system updates four hours a week. The rest of my time belongs to my daughters.”

“I think your father would be very proud of that decision,” Naomi said quietly, her eyes warm with genuine affection.
