Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

The murmurs in the grand ballroom instantly escalated into a chaotic roar of confusion and shock. Several security guards in tight black suits sprinted down the side aisles toward me, their hands reaching for their utility belts, but before they could intercept me, Maya stepped up to the master audio-visual control booth at the back of the room and slammed her hand down on the manual override switch.
BAM.
The massive overhead projection screens behind Arthur Sterling flickered violently, cutting away from the glossy architectural rendering of the skyscraper. For three agonizing seconds, the screen went pitch black.
Then, the high-definition video files downloaded from the encrypted flash drive began to play.
It wasn't a corporate presentation. It was a split-screen financial audit.
On the left side of the screen was a detailed bank ledger showing three million dollars illegally siphoned from my firm's reserve accounts, funneled through three different shell companies directly back into Arthur Sterling’s personal offshore Swiss holding account.
On the right side of the screen was a recorded video deposition of Jessica sitting in a police interrogation room, her face tear-streaked and hysterical, pointing directly at a framed photograph of Arthur Sterling on her phone.
“He told me to do it!” Jessica's voice screamed through the ballroom's powerful speakers, crystal clear and unmistakable. “Arthur said if I couldn't get Daniel to sign over the property deed voluntarily through marriage, I had to frame him for corporate embezzlement and force a liquidation sale! He promised me half a million dollars when the project broke ground!”
The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated pandemonium.
Investors leapt out of their velvet chairs, knocking over crystal wine glasses and shouting insults at the stage. Several journalists from the local financial press frantically pulled out their phones, snapping high-speed photographs of the screens while recording live audio.
Arthur Sterling stood frozen at the podium, his face turning the color of skim milk. All of his aristocratic charm, his golden-rimmed glasses, and his billion-dollar arrogance evaporated in an instant. He looked out at the hostile crowd, then down at me as I finally reached the base of the stage steps.
“You... you ruined everything, you arrogant little nobody,” Sterling hissed, his voice trembling with impotent rage as he leaned over the edge of the stage.
“I didn't ruin anything, Arthur,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and echoing through the microphone clipped to my lapel. “I just balanced your books.”
Before Sterling could turn and run off the back of the stage, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom blew open with a deafening crash.
Half a dozen uniformed police officers, led by a detective holding an active federal arrest warrant, marched down the center aisle with heavy, purposeful strides.
“Arthur Sterling!” the lead detective shouted over the noise of the chaotic crowd, holding up a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. “Step away from the podium. You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, extortion, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

As the officers swarmed the stage and slapped the cuffs onto Sterling’s expensive Italian silk cuffs, dragging him away in disgrace past a sea of flashes and screaming reporters, I stood at the bottom of the steps and let out a long, shuddering breath.
The nightmare was finally over. The monster behind the curtain had been dragged out into the harsh light of day.
