Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Revealed

I kept the baseball bat resting against my thigh, though I lowered it a fraction of an inch as I stared at the small black flash drive resting on the wooden patio table. The red LED light on the drive blinked rhythmically in the dark, like a mechanical heartbeat.
“Why should I trust a single word that comes out of your mouth, Maya?” I asked, my voice flat and devoid of warmth. “You stood right beside her at the altar. You held her bouquet while she wore a fake belly and laughed behind my back.”
“Because Jessica threw me under the bus the second the cops put cuffs on her wrists,” Maya said bitterly, stepping closer and shivering in the autumn chill. “She called my holding cell phone three hours ago demanding I take the fall for the corporate wire transfers, claiming I was the one who had administrative access to your firm's accounts. She’s a sociopath, Daniel. She doesn't care about anyone except herself.”
“That makes two of us,” I muttered, reaching out to pick up the flash drive. It felt cold and impossibly light, yet it held the weight of my entire ruined life. “What’s on here?”
“Everything,” Maya replied urgently. “Contracts, shell company registries, and communication logs between Jessica and the man who financed the entire operation. His name isn't important right now, but his title is. He’s the majority shareholder of the investment firm that tried to do a hostile buyout of your architectural company six months ago—Vance & Sterling Capital.”
My blood ran cold. Vance & Sterling Capital. They were a notorious corporate raider firm known for systematically bankrupting family-owned businesses and swallowing their real estate portfolio for pennies on the dollar.
“Marcus’s firm...” I whispered, the name registering in my brain with a sickening thud.
“No, not Marcus,” Maya corrected quickly. “Marcus is clean. It’s his senior partner, Arthur Sterling. He’s the one pulling the strings. Jessica was his plant from day one. They didn't just want your money, Daniel—they wanted the land your office building sits on for a massive commercial development project. Your architectural firm was standing right in the middle of a multi-million-dollar downtown revitalization deal.”
The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with terrifying clarity. The fake pregnancy, the rushed wedding, the corporate wire transfers, the threats against Emily—it wasn't just a personal betrayal. It was a calculated, cold-blooded corporate hit job.
“We need to take this to the FBI tonight,” I said, turning toward the sliding glass door.
“The FBI won't act on a flash drive handed over by an unverified accomplice in the middle of the night,” Maya argued, grabbing my forearm. “Sterling has judges and local politicians in his pocket. If we go through official channels without ironclad, undeniable public exposure, they’ll bury this evidence by morning, and you and your daughter will end up ruined—or worse.”
“Then what do you suggest we do?” I demanded, turning to face her fully.
Maya pulled out her own phone, tapping the screen a few times before holding it up to show me a live-streaming setup interface.
“We expose him ourselves,” she said, her eyes burning with a desperate resolve. “Tomorrow morning, Arthur Sterling is hosting an exclusive charity gala at the downtown Grand Meridian hotel for city developers and investors. He’s going to announce his new downtown development project—the exact project built on top of your office land.”

She looked me dead in the eye.
“We crash his party, hijack his presentation screens with the files from this flash drive, and let the entire city watch him fall.”
