Chapter 3 - THE LEGAL WEAPON

Richard Sterling adjusted his gold cuff links, his expression unbothered by Julian’s hostility. He opened his leather folder and held out a crisp sheet of paper printed on heavy cream stock.
"I suggest you read this carefully, Dr. Hayes," Sterling said coolly. "This is a court injunction issued one hour ago by Judge Marcus Vance—Ethan’s uncle, in case you were wondering about the family tree. It revokes your authority as her primary medical proxy and mandates that Mrs. Maya Vance be transferred to the St. Cloud Private Clinic under the care of our personal medical team. The transport team is downstairs."
Julian didn't even look at the paper. He stepped closer to Sterling, towering over the sleek attorney.
"She is in stable condition following trauma surgery," Julian spat. "Moving her right now could trigger internal re-bleeding or a fatal embolism. I am the Chief of Emergency Medicine at this facility. Under medical necessity laws, I can hold any patient whose transport poses an immediate threat to life."
"And under the law, you are a biased family member who committed physical battery against my client in this very building," Sterling countered smoothly. "If you resist this order, I will have federal marshals remove you in hand-cuffs, strip you of your medical license, and revoke your employment here before sunrise."
From the bed, Maya’s weak voice cut through the tension. "Julian... no... don't let them..."
"See?" Sterling smiled thin and sharp. "The patient is clearly agitated by your presence, Doctor. Men, call the transport crew up."
One of the suits reached for his coat pocket to make a phone call, but before he could pull out his phone, the door clicked open again.
Detective Clara Mercer walked in, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray pantsuit carrying an old leather briefcase. The woman had sharp blue eyes, hair pulled into a tight silver ponytail, and an aura of absolute legal authority.
"Hold your horses, Sterling," the woman in the gray suit said, her voice dry and laced with razor-sharp sarcasm.
Sterling froze, his confident smile wavering for the first time. "Evelyn Reed? What are you doing here?"
Evelyn Reed was Seattle's most feared civil rights and high-stakes criminal defense attorney—a woman who had spent thirty years tearing billionaire corporate defense teams to shreds.
"I'm here representing my client," Evelyn said, tapping her leather briefcase.
"Your client?" Sterling scoffed. "Maya Vance hasn't retained counsel. She hasn't even left this bed!"
"She didn't need to," Evelyn said calmly, pulling a laminated document from her bag. "Eighteen months ago, prior to her marriage to Ethan Vance, Maya signed a legal co-habitation agreement and personal medical proxy designation drafted by my firm. It explicitly states that in the event of severe physical trauma, incapacity, or spousal conflict, full medical and legal guardianship defaults immediately to her brother, Dr. Julian Hayes."
Sterling’s face turned pale. "That's impossible. Ethan's prenuptial agreement superseded all prior contracts!"
"The prenuptial agreement covered financial assets, Richard," Evelyn chuckled, stepping up to Sterling and poking him in the chest with her pen. "It didn't cover body autonomy. And even if it did, a prenuptial agreement is rendered null and void the moment one party is formally charged with attempted murder of the second party."
"Attempted murder?!" Sterling shouted. "He was charged with domestic assault!"
"The charges were upgraded ten minutes ago," Detective Mercer chimed in from the doorway, leaning against the frame with a satisfied grin. "We retrieved the security footage from the Vance mansion driveway. Turns out, Ethan's smart-home camera caught him dragging an unconscious woman across the lawn and tossing her into the back of his SUV like a sack of laundry. That isn't an accident, Mr. Sterling. That’s a premeditated violent crime."
Sterling took a step back, looking between Evelyn, Mercer, and Julian. The wall of corporate invincibility he had built around the Vance family was cracking.
"This isn't over," Sterling hissed through clenched teeth. "We will drag this through every court in the state. We will ruin all of you."
"Try it," Evelyn replied coldly. "Now take your muscle and get out of this ICU before I file an emergency restraining order that bans you from stepping within five hundred feet of this building."
Defeated for the moment, Sterling gestured to his two security guards, and the three of them hurried out of the room, their heavy boots echoing down the quiet corridor.
Julian let out a massive breath he felt like he’d been holding for hours. He turned to Evelyn. "How did you get here so fast?"
"Clara called me the moment Ethan was booked," Evelyn said, walking over to Maya’s bedside and looking down at the young woman with a softer expression. "I knew Victoria Vance would try a heavy-handed legal play tonight. She always uses the same playbook. But we only bought ourselves a little time, Julian."
"What do you mean?" Julian asked.
"Victoria will have Ethan out on high-figure bail by tomorrow afternoon," Evelyn explained, pulling up a chair. "Judge Vance will claim Ethan isn't a flight risk and grant home confinement at the Vance private estate. Once Ethan is out, they will use every dark PR firm in the country to smear Maya. They’ll paint her as unstable, an alcoholic, a gold-digger who fabricated these injuries to steal Ethan's fortune."
"They won't succeed," Maya whispered, her eyes opening wider. The fear in her expression was beginning to be replaced by a cold, quiet determination.
"Maya, you need to rest," Julian said gently.
"No," Maya insisted, struggling to sit up slightly. Julian quickly helped adjust her pillows. "Evelyn... Julian... you don't know what Ethan is capable of. He... he doesn't just have money. He has people inside the city government. He has... safe deposit boxes."
"Safe deposit boxes?" Detective Mercer stepped closer, pulling out her notepad. "What's in them, Maya?"
Maya took a shaky breath, clutching her sore chest. "Three weeks ago, Ethan left his laptop open in his private study. I was looking for a design file for a project, but I saw an encrypted folder named Project Sentinel. I clicked it... and I found years of shell companies. Ethan and Victoria have been using Vance Capital to launder funds from fraudulent medical supply contracts. They were buying cheap, defective surgical equipment overseas and selling it to public hospitals—including Riverside—at a ten thousand percent markup."
Julian gasped. "The defective ventilator systems in the East Wing last year... two patients died because of pump failures!"
"They knew," Maya wept softly. "They knew the equipment was faulty, but they made fifty million dollars on the deal. When I confronted Ethan about it three nights ago, he told me to keep my mouth shut. Last night, I tried to copy the files onto a flash drive to bring to the FBI. He caught me."
The room went completely silent. The gravity of the situation slammed into them. This wasn't just a domestic abuse trial. This was a massive corporate conspiracy involving corruption, murder, and high-level fraud.
"Where is the flash drive now, Maya?" Mercer asked, her voice deadly serious.
"It's still in the house," Maya whispered. "Hidden inside my hollowed-out wooden drafting board in the sunroom. If Ethan gets bail and goes back to that house... he will find it and destroy it."
Julian looked at Mercer, then at Evelyn. "Then we need to get to that house before he does."
May you like
"You can't just break into a billionaire's estate, Julian," Mercer warned. "It's a crime scene, but my search warrant is currently held up by a friendly judge in Victoria’s pocket."
"Then we don't go as police," Julian said, his eyes darkening with dangerous resolve. "We go as family taking back what belongs to my sister."
