Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE VANCE EMPIRE

The cold rain of Seattle washed over the pristine glass facade of the Vance Capital Tower, but inside the executive suite on the forty-fifth floor, the atmosphere was even colder.
Victoria Vance sat at the head of a massive mahogany conference table. At sixty-two, Victoria was the undisputed matriarch of the Vance family—a woman whose cold elegance was as sharp as a diamond scalpel. She wore an immaculate ivory power suit, her silver hair pulled back into a flawless bun. She held a crystal glass of scotch, her piercing grey eyes fixed on the attorney standing before her.
"Explain it to me again, Richard," Victoria said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And use simple words."
Richard Sterling, the chief legal counsel for Vance Capital, wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Your son, Ethan, is currently booked at the King County Jail. He was denied bail this morning following a physical altercation with Dr. Julian Hayes—the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Riverside. Maya is in critical condition."
Victoria slammed her glass down on the polished wood. Scotch splashed onto the document folder. "A hospital brawl?! Is he out of his mind?! We are three weeks away from finalizing the merger with the Sterling Global Conglomerate! If the board gets wind that my son—the prospective CEO—is sitting in a jail cell for beating his wife, the stock will drop forty percent by noon!"
"The police report is sealed for now, Victoria," Richard stammered. "Mainly because Julian Hayes hasn't formally released Maya's medical charts to the press. But Ethan's mugshot is already circulating among high-level law enforcement. We need to handle this quietly."
"Quietly?" Victoria stood up, her commanding presence filling the room. "No, Richard. We don't handle this quietly. We crush it. Maya Vance is a nobody—an orphan architect Ethan brought home to play house with. She has no money, no pedigree, and no power. Her brother is a glorified public servant. I want Ethan out on bail within two hours, and I want Maya's medical records sealed under strict medical privacy laws. If that doctor brother makes a noise, ruin him."
"Yes, Mrs. Vance," Richard said, bowing slightly before rushing out of the office.
Victoria turned to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring down at the blurred city lights below. She didn't care about Maya's health. She didn't even particularly care about Ethan's moral failings. To Victoria, people were simply assets or liabilities. And right now, Maya Vance was threatening to destroy forty years of corporate dominion.
Meanwhile, on the fourth floor of Riverside Hospital, the lights were dimmed in the Intensive Care Unit.
Julian Hayes stood outside Room 402, leaning against the cold wall with a paper cup of lukewarm black coffee. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. His hands, usually steady enough to perform emergency thoracotomies, were shaking slightly.
The door opened softly, and Detective Clara Mercer stepped out. Mercer was a veteran investigator with twenty years on the force—a woman with sharp eyes, a perpetually tired expression, and a dark trench coat that smelled faintly of rain and peppermint.
"How is she, Doc?" Mercer asked softly, taking out a small yellow notepad.
"Stable," Julian said, his voice raspy. "Concussion, three broken ribs, severe tissue trauma along her wrists, and internal bleeding that we managed to stop two hours ago. The injuries aren't consistent with a fall in the shower, Detective. They're consistent with prolonged, systemic physical abuse."
Mercer sighed, flipping through her notes. "I believe you, Julian. But you know who Ethan Vance is. His mother owns half the real estate in this city, and their legal team has already contacted the Chief of Police. They’re claiming Ethan acted in self-defense during a marital dispute, and they’re framing your punch in the ER as an unprovoked assault by a bitter brother-in-law."
Julian straightened up, his chest heaving. "He almost killed her, Clara! Look at her!"
"I'm on your side!" Mercer whispered fiercely, pulling Julian into an alcove away from the nurses' station. "But we need evidence that holds up in a court of law. Ethan isn't some corner street thug. He has resources. He has surveillance blockers in his estate. He has private security guards who sign non-disclosure agreements. If Maya doesn't wake up and give a formal statement, or if we don't find physical proof of premeditation, Victoria Vance will walk him out of that courthouse by tomorrow afternoon."
Julian clutched his coffee cup so tightly the plastic lid popped off. "She will wake up. And when she does, I will make sure she never has to look at that monster again."
"Just keep your temper in check, Hayes," Mercer warned gently, tapping his chest. "If you hit him again, you’ll be sitting in a cell right next to him, and then who will protect her?"
Mercer turned and walked down the hallway, her boots clicking against the linoleum. Julian took a deep breath, pushing open the heavy door to Maya's room.
The only sound in the room was the rhythmic, heart-rending beep of the heart monitor. Maya looked so tiny beneath the white hospital sheets. Her face was bruised and swollen, her skin pale against the dark hair spread across the pillow.
Julian pulled a chair up to the side of the bed and sat down. He carefully took her hand, avoiding the IV lines taped to her wrist.
"I'm sorry, Maya," he whispered into the quiet room. "I was so wrapped up in my own life, my long shifts at the hospital... I should have seen the signs. I should have come over when you stopped answering my texts."
Memory flashed through Julian's mind—six months ago, at a family dinner. Maya had worn a long-sleeved silk blouse on a scorching eighty-degree summer afternoon. She had flinched slightly when Ethan reached over to place a hand on the back of her neck. Julian had noticed it, but when he asked her later, Maya had laughed it off, saying Ethan was just possessive because he loved her so much.
How could I have been so blind? Julian thought, a tear slipping down his nose.
Suddenly, Maya’s fingers twitched inside his hand.
Julian stiffened, immediately looking up at her face. Her eyelids fluttered weakly. A small, pained groan escaped her lips as she struggled against the heavy sedatives flowing through her system.
"Maya?" Julian leaned in close, his heart pounding. "Maya, can you hear me? It’s Julian. You’re safe. You’re at Riverside."
Maya’s eyes slowly opened. They were glassy, unfocused, and terrified. She tried to turn her head, but winced in agony.
"J-Julian..." her voice was barely a scratchy whisper.
"Don't move, sweetie. Don't try to talk. You're in the ICU. The police are involved. Ethan is in custody."
At the mention of Ethan's name, a shudder rippled through Maya’s body. Her monitor beeped faster as her blood pressure spiked.
"No..." she gasped, tears pooling in the corners of her swollen eyes. "Julian... you don't understand... he... he has..."
"Shh, keep calm. What does he have?"
"The... the safe," Maya whimpered, grabbing Julian's forearm with unexpected strength. "In the study... behind the painting. He... he kept everything. Not just... what he did to me... but the accounts... the money laundering... Victoria's money..."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What are you saying, Maya?"
"He didn't... he didn't just beat me last night because he was angry," Maya sobbed softly, her lungs straining with each breath. "I found... I found the ledger. I saw what they were doing to the hospital foundation... to your hospital, Julian. He knew I saw it. That's why... that's why he tried to kill me."
Julian felt a cold chill run down his spine. This wasn't just a case of domestic violence anymore. This was a systematic execution attempt disguised as a tragic accident.
Before Julian could answer, the door to the ICU room swung open abruptly.
Standing in the doorway was Richard Sterling, accompanied by two imposing men in dark suits holding legal briefcases.
"Dr. Hayes," Sterling said smoothly, stepping into the room with an insufferable smirk. "I am Richard Sterling, legal representative for the Vance estate. As Mrs. Maya Vance's lawful husband, Mr. Ethan Vance has executed a power of attorney transfer. We are here to oversee her transfer to a private facility in Switzerland immediately."

Julian stood up slowly, stepping between the lawyers and his sister's bed. The air in the room instantly turned electric.
"She isn't going anywhere," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Get out of my hospital."
