Chapter 6 - THE SETTLEMENT TERMS

Daniel stepped up to the table, pulling a pen from his coat pocket. “What terms are you offering, Natalie? Eleanor told my court lawyer you were willing to waive the embezzlement damages if I signed the full corporate surrender.”
Natalie opened the folder, revealing two identical copies of a legal decree.
“If you sign these papers today,” Natalie explained calmly, “I will not file criminal charges regarding the forged signatures on the joint investment wire transfers from last March. You will retain your professional architectural license, and I will transfer ownership of the studio’s physical equipment—the computers, the drafting tables, the models—to a small rental space in Queens.”
Daniel’s eyes flickered with a desperate ray of hope. “Queens? You’re letting me keep the equipment?”
“The equipment, yes,” Natalie replied. “The client accounts, no. Every client secured under the Hale & Associates brand during our marriage has been informed of the corporate dissolution. Four of your top commercial accounts have already transferred their retainer contracts to my medical foundation’s facility development team.”
Daniel dropped his pen onto the table, his breath catching in his throat. “You took my clients? Natalie... those contracts were worth two million dollars over three years!”
“Those contracts were secured using my personal liability insurance as collateral, Daniel,” Natalie countered, her dark eyes locking onto his with absolute authority. “You used my name to build your credibility in this city. You don't get to use my name while raising another family on my money.”
Chloe took a step forward, her hand trembling. “Dr. Harper... please... Daniel needs those contracts to support Lilly! We have nothing left!”
Natalie turned her head slightly toward Chloe. Her expression didn't harden into hatred; it remained cool, professional, and detached.
“Miss Vance,” Natalie said softly, “your daughter deserves a secure life. Which is why thirty percent of Daniel’s remaining studio equipment equity is being placed into a court-monitored child support trust managed directly by the state. He won't be able to spend it on new business ventures or luxury coats.”
Chloe stared at Natalie, realizing in that single moment that the woman standing in her living room was not a bitter, hysterical ex-wife—she was a force of nature who had secured the child’s financial future while stripping the lying father of his vanity.
Daniel looked down at the papers on the table. His hands shook violently as he picked up the pen once again.
“Sign it, Daniel,” Chloe whispered from behind him, her voice hollow. “Sign it so we can end this.”
Daniel pressed the pen to the paper. His signature was shaky and uneven as he signed line after line, giving up his penthouse, his high-society status, his commercial contracts, and his pristine reputation in exchange for his freedom from criminal indictment.
As he finished the last page, Natalie picked up the signed documents, checked every seal, and placed them neatly back into her leather folder.

“The movers will deliver your drafting tables to the Queens facility on Monday,” Natalie said, zipping her folder shut. “Goodbye, Daniel.”
She walked out the door, her heels clicking softly down the hallway, leaving Daniel standing in the middle of a cluttered room, holding a baby he couldn't afford, inside an empire that had crumbled to dust.
