Chapter 2 - THE COLD BREAK

Daniel took a tentative, anxious step forward down the polished linoleum floor, his free hand reaching out toward Natalie in a desperate, pleading gesture.
“Natalie, please...” he whispered, his eyes darting frantically toward the pale woman in the bed behind him, then back to his wife in scrubs. “It’s not... let me explain—”
Before his hand could reach across the space between them, Natalie took a single, deliberate pace backward. She raised her right hand smoothly, palm facing outward—a universal, immovable barrier that stopped him dead in his tracks.
She didn't look at his face right away. Her eyes drifted down to his outstretched hand, where his gold wedding band still gleamed under the hospital lighting. Then, slowly, her gaze rose to meet his terrified eyes with cold, unyielding clarity.
“Enjoy your trip to Italy, Daniel,” Natalie said. Her voice was quiet, steady, and entirely devoid of heat.
Daniel flinched as if she had struck him with an iron bar. “Natalie... wait! Just hear me out for two minutes!”
Natalie didn't give him two seconds. She calmly reached down and pulled her smartphone from her scrub pocket. Her thumb hovered over the glass screen for a fraction of a second. With three swift, precise taps, she pulled up her security settings: she blocked his phone number, disconnected his access to her primary banking line, and removed him as a authorized user on her joint credit accounts.
Daniel’s eyes widened in horror as he heard the soft chime of a bank notification ping on his own phone inside his coat pocket. He realized instantly what she was doing. The air left his lungs in a sharp gasp.
“Natalie, please, don't do this here—” he begged, taking another desperate step forward.
Natalie didn't argue. She didn't answer. She slipped her phone back into her scrub pocket, turned on her heel with fluid, clinical composure, and began walking down the corridor away from him.

“NATALIE!” Daniel shouted, but he couldn't run. He couldn't drop the newborn in his arms, nor could he leave the woman recovering in the hospital bed behind him. He was trapped in the doorway of his double life, frozen in place by the weight of his own secrets.
Natalie walked away. Her stride was rhythmic and even, her eyes fixed straight ahead on the double doors leading back to the surgical suite. She didn't look back once.
