Chapter 7 - The Truth at the Little Blue House

They reached the house shortly before sunset.
It stood at the end of a quiet road, surrounded by bare trees and a white wooden fence. A child's bicycle rested beside the porch.
Damian remained inside the car for nearly a minute.
Emma understood why.
What if Isabella was there?
What if she wasn't?
What if she had survived only to discover that the man she once loved had become someone she could no longer recognize?
"You don't have to go alone," Emma said.
Damian looked at her.
"I don't know what I'll say."
"Start with the truth."
He stepped out.
A woman opened the front door before he reached the porch.
She was older than the woman in the photographs, her dark hair streaked with gray. A faint scar crossed her temple.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Damian stopped breathing.
"Isabella?"
The woman gripped the doorframe.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she whispered, "Damian."
He took one uncertain step forward.
"You're alive."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I didn't know how to come back."
He stared at her, struggling to reconcile the woman before him with four years of grief.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Anthony threatened Luca. He said if I returned, he would make sure our son disappeared."
Damian's face changed.
"He used our son to keep you away?"
"And he made me believe you had agreed to leave me behind."
"I never agreed to anything."
"I know that now."
Isabella looked past him and noticed Emma.
Her expression shifted.
"Who is she?"
"Emma Carter. She saved Luca's life."
Isabella covered her mouth.
"Catherine's daughter?"
Emma froze.
"You knew my mother?"
"She saved me."
Isabella invited them inside.
Over tea, she explained what had happened.
Before the crash, she and Catherine had discovered that Anthony was diverting money from the shipping company and financing illegal operations through legitimate businesses. They had gathered evidence and planned to deliver it to federal investigators.
Anthony learned about their plan.
The crash was arranged to eliminate Isabella. When she survived, he convinced her that Damian had abandoned her and threatened to harm Luca if she returned.
Catherine helped her escape, but she was forced to disappear shortly afterward.
"What happened to my mother?" Emma asked.
Isabella lowered her eyes.
"She was going to testify. I never saw her again."
Emma felt the room closing around her.
For years, she had believed her mother died in an accident.
Now she understood that Catherine had been caught in a struggle she barely understood as a child.
"Did Anthony kill her?"
"I don't know," Isabella said. "But I believe he knows what happened."
Damian reached across the table.
"Come home."
Isabella looked at him with heartbreaking uncertainty.
"I don't know if I can."
"Then we won't rush anything. But Luca deserves to know his mother is alive."
At the mention of their son, Isabella began to cry.
Emma placed a hand over hers.
"You don't have to decide everything tonight."
For the first time in years, Isabella seemed able to breathe.
Then her expression sharpened.
"There's something else you need to know."
She went to a cupboard and retrieved a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Anthony standing beside a federal investigator.
The date was recent.
Isabella's voice trembled.
"Anthony isn't acting alone. Someone inside the government has been protecting him."
Damian studied the photograph.

The investigation had just become far more dangerous.
And the man responsible for destroying his family might still have powerful friends.
