Chapter 5 - The Secret Isabella Left Behind

The intruder had entered through a maintenance passage and left without triggering the main alarm.

That frightened Damian more than a direct attack.

Only a handful of people knew about the passage.

Every one of them had served the Vescari family for years.

Marco organized a security sweep while Damian escorted Emma and Luca to a secure room.

"I don't want Luca caught in the middle of this," Emma said.

"Neither do I."

"Then let me help."

Damian hesitated.

"You've already done enough."

"That isn't your decision."

He studied her for a long moment.

Then he handed her Catherine's personnel file.

"Start here."

Emma spent the morning examining the documents. Her mother had made handwritten notes beside several shipping transactions. Most seemed ordinary until she noticed a series of payments routed through a charity established in Isabella's name.

The charity had supposedly funded medical care for injured dockworkers.

Instead, millions of dollars had disappeared.

One document mentioned a storage facility on the southern edge of the city.

Another contained a short note.

Isabella has the original.

Emma brought everything to Damian.

"My mother wasn't just a clerk. She was helping Isabella investigate your uncle."

"That appears to be the case."

"Why would your wife keep evidence against a member of her own family?"

"Because she believed he was stealing from people who couldn't defend themselves."

Damian's voice was quiet.

"Isabella hated cruelty. She used to tell me that power meant nothing if it only protected the powerful."

Emma looked at him.

"Did you listen?"

"Not enough."

For the first time, he seemed willing to acknowledge the mistakes that had shaped his life.

They drove to the storage facility with Marco and two security officers.

Inside a rented unit, they found boxes of accounting records, old photographs, and a locked metal case.

The key was taped beneath a photograph of Catherine and Isabella standing together outside a hospital.

Damian opened the case.

Inside lay a small ledger and a letter.

Emma recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.

If you're reading this, I wasn't able to finish what I started.

Anthony has been moving money through the shipping company and using the family name to intimidate anyone who asks questions. Isabella has copies of the original records.

Damian must know the truth, but I fear his loyalty to his family will blind him.

Emma stopped reading.

Damian took the letter, his face unreadable.

"She was wrong about one thing," he said.

"What?"

"I would have listened."

"Would you?"

He met her gaze.

"Maybe not then. But I would now."

A sudden noise came from outside.

Marco drew his weapon and moved toward the entrance.

Two men were waiting by the vehicles.

A brief struggle followed. One escaped, but the other was detained by security.

When Damian questioned him, the man refused to speak.

Then Marco found a phone in his pocket.

The last message displayed on the screen read:

Destroy the ledger. Kill the woman if necessary.

The sender's number belonged to Anthony Vescari.

Damian stared at it for a long time.

His uncle had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.

Yet Emma noticed something else.

The ledger contained entries dated months after Isabella's supposed death.

Someone had continued using her authorization codes.

And if Isabella had been dead, there was only one explanation.

May you like

Anthony had stolen her identity.

Or Isabella's death had never happened the way Damian believed.
