Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Visitor

At two o'clock in the afternoon, while Lily was taking her afternoon nap, a soft knock sounded at the front door.

Claire and Evan exchanged a cautious glance.

"Expecting someone?" Evan asked, setting down his book.

"No," Claire said, her heart giving a quick, familiar flutter of apprehension.

Evan walked to the front door and peeked through the side window before pulling it open.

Standing on the porch was Aunt Marsha. She was wrapped in a thick wool coat, holding a large Tupperware container wrapped in a red ribbon, her nose red from the cold wind.

"Hi, Evan," Marsha said nervously, shifting her weight from foot to foot. "I... I hope I'm not intruding. I brought some of the cinnamon rolls Claire likes."

Claire walked into the entryway, surprised. "Aunt Marsha? What are you doing here?"

Marsha looked at her niece, her eyes filling with sudden tears. She stepped inside, letting Evan close the door behind her, and set the container down on the entryway bench.

"I left my sister's house last night, Claire," Marsha said softly, her voice trembling. "After you left, Carol spent two hours screaming at everyone, blaming you, blaming Evan, blaming me for not taking her side. And I sat there looking at all those expensive, untouched gifts under that giant tree... and I realized how lonely that house really was."

Claire stood still, listening to her aunt’s confession.

"I've spent twenty years walking on eggshells around Carol because she's my older sister and she has all the money," Marsha continued, wiping a tear from her cheek. "But watching you stand up for your daughter yesterday... watching you protect Lily... it made me ashamed that I never protected you when you were little."

Claire felt a tear slip down her own cheek. She walked forward and wrapped her arms around her aunt, holding her tightly in the warm hallway.

"You're here now, Marsha," Claire whispered. "That's what matters."
