Chapter 8 - The First Morning

The next morning, Christmas Day broke crisp and clear. Sunlight streamed through the lace curtains of the master bedroom, casting long geometric patterns of gold across the hardwood floor.

Claire woke up to the sound of soft babbling coming from the baby monitor on her nightstand. She turned her head and looked at the clock: 7:30 AM.

For the first time in her adult life, she hadn't spent the night waking up every two hours worrying about what outfit to put on, what time to arrive, or how to keep the peace.

She swung her legs out of bed, pulled on a warm flannel robe, and walked down the hall to Lily’s room.

The baby was standing in her crib, holding onto the top rail with both hands, bouncing up and down on her chubby little feet. When she saw Claire enter the room, her whole face lit up with a toothless, six-tooth smile, her small hands clapping together in delight.

"Good morning, my sweet girl," Claire whispered, reaching down to lift Lily into her arms.

She held the baby close, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of baby lotion and flannel. Lily buried her face in Claire’s neck, her tiny arms wrapping around her mother’s shoulders with surprising strength.

Evan appeared in the doorway a moment later, holding two fresh cups of coffee, his hair messy from sleep.

"Merry Christmas," he said softly, walking over to kiss Claire’s forehead and stroke Lily’s cheek.

"Merry Christmas," Claire replied, feeling a deep, quiet warmth settling over her heart.

They went downstairs together. There were no elaborate catering trays or formal place settings. Evan made pancakes in his old iron skillet, while Lily sat in her high chair, blissfully smearing banana puree across her tray.

In the living room, they sat on the rug together and opened the few simple gifts they had bought for each other. Lily was far more interested in the crinkly wrapping paper than the wooden blocks inside, giggling wildly every time Evan crumpled up a sheet of paper and tossed it softly at her head.

It was chaotic, unscripted, and entirely perfect.
