Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH SOFIA DESERVED

The days following Rafael's arrest were filled with questions.
Investigators searched the old estate and uncovered evidence connecting him to the falsification of medical records, financial crimes, and the attempted concealment of several deaths.
Former employees began speaking.
Some had remained silent out of fear. Others had been paid to look away.
The ledger provided a path toward accountability, but it could not undo twelve years of grief.
Elena spent most mornings in a quiet room overlooking the garden.
She had imagined returning home many times, but never expected to find herself facing a brother who had grown into a stranger.
Dante visited her every afternoon.
Sometimes they spoke about their parents.
Sometimes they argued.
And sometimes they sat in silence, learning how to exist in the same room without the past separating them.
One evening, Elena asked the question he had been avoiding.
"What will you do with Adrian?"
Dante looked through the window.
"That depends on whether he tells the truth."
"He helped me escape. He also helped Rafael conceal what happened."
"Both things can be true."
Elena nodded.
"Then perhaps he should have the chance to make amends."
Dante looked at her.
"You still love him?"
"I loved the man I believed he could become. That isn't the same as trusting the man he became."
Across the mansion, Isabela was packing her belongings.
She had decided to leave.
Not because she hated Dante, but because the house reminded her of every secret she had carried for three years.
Sofia sat on the bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"Are we going home?"
"Yes, sweetheart."
"Can the sad man come?"
Isabela stopped folding clothes.
"Which sad man?"
"The one with the chair."
She sighed.
"Sofia, Mr. Montenegro has a very big house."
"But he has nobody."
Isabela looked toward the window.
She knew that Dante had begun attending the small family dinners Elena organized. She had also seen him sitting alone in the dining room long after everyone else had left.
She understood why he kept the chair empty.
Some grief was easier to preserve than to confront.
That evening, Dante found Isabela in the entrance hall with two suitcases.
"You're leaving."
"I have a daughter to raise."
"You can raise her here."
"That's not what I want."
He accepted the answer without argument.
Then he handed her an envelope.
Inside were the deed to a modest house near the coast, a bank account established in Sofia's name, and a letter confirming that Isabela would never be required to work for the Montenegro family again.
She stared at him.
"I don't want your money."
"It's not payment for your service."
"Then what is it?"
"A chance to choose your future without fear."
Isabela's eyes filled.
"You can't buy your way out of what happened."
"I know."
"Then why are you doing this?"
Dante looked toward Sofia, who was attempting to make her rabbit sit upright on a suitcase.
"Because I spent twelve years believing I could protect my family by controlling everything around them."
He paused.
"It didn't work."
Isabela studied him.
For the first time, she saw a man who was not asking for forgiveness.
He was trying to learn how to deserve it.
"I will accept the house," she said finally. "But Sofia's account will remain hers, and I will make every decision about her future."
"Agreed."
"And no guards following us."
"Agreed."
"And no secrets."
Dante hesitated.
Then he nodded.
"No more secrets."
Sofia ran toward him.
"Are you coming to visit us?"
Dante knelt.
"If your mother allows it."
The little girl turned toward Isabela with enormous eyes.
Isabela tried to maintain a stern expression.
"You may visit, provided you behave."
Sofia threw her arms around Dante's neck.
He went completely still.
Then, carefully, he hugged her back.
Across the hall, Elena watched them with tears in her eyes.
For the first time in twelve years, the forbidden chair was no longer the center of the family's grief.
It had become a reminder of the people they had lost—and the people they still had a chance to save.
But the following morning, a letter arrived from the authorities.
Adrian had agreed to testify against Rafael.

In exchange, he requested one thing.
A chance to tell Sofia the truth about her father.
