Chapter 5 - THE GIRL IN THE LOCKED ROOM

Sofia had stopped crying an hour earlier.

Not because she was no longer afraid, but because she had discovered that the man guarding her didn't like noise.

His name was Victor.

He had a gray beard, a gold watch, and a scar across his chin. He had given her crackers and a bottle of water, then locked the door of the small room where she sat.

Sofia had asked to call her mother.

Victor had refused.

She had asked for her stuffed rabbit.

He had ignored her.

Finally, she had asked whether he liked pancakes.

Victor had looked at her as though she had spoken another language.

"Why?"

"Because Mommy makes pancakes when she's sad."

He had turned away.

Now Sofia sat beside a narrow window, drawing pictures on the back of a paper napkin.

She drew her mother.

Then herself.

Then a tall man with black hair.

She had met Dante only a few times before the kidnapping, but she remembered him clearly. He had once stopped in the hallway while she was carrying a basket of folded towels.

"You shouldn't carry that," he had said.

"It's not heavy."

"You are small."

"I'm getting bigger."

He had almost smiled.

Now she hoped he would come.

A key turned in the lock.

Victor entered with a telephone.

"Someone wants to speak to you."

Sofia took it carefully.

"Mommy?"

A familiar voice answered.

"Sweetheart, listen to me. Are you hurt?"

"No, Mommy."

"Are you scared?"

Sofia considered lying.

"A little."

Isabela's breath caught.

"I'm coming for you. I promise."

"Can I have my rabbit?"

"I'll bring him."

"And pancakes?"

Isabela began to cry.

"All the pancakes you want."

The call ended.

Victor reached for the phone, but Sofia held it against her chest.

"Please don't make Mommy cry."

He froze.

For a moment, something shifted behind his expression.

Then he took the phone and left.

Across the city, Isabela stood beside Dante in a secure room while Elena studied the ledger.

"We need to know where they're holding her," Dante said.

Elena pointed to an entry.

"An old medical facility outside the city. It belonged to our father's foundation."

Dante looked at Rafael's signature.

"Why would my uncle use a hospital?"

"Because nobody questions a medical delivery truck. And because your father built a network of safe houses disguised as charitable facilities."

Dante stared at the map.

"How many children?"

Elena lowered her eyes.

"Too many."

The realization was devastating.

The ledger contained records of missing patients, altered medical documents, and payments made to officials who had helped conceal people who were supposed to have died.

Rafael had inherited more than the family's criminal organization.

He had inherited its secrets.

Dante called his security chief.

"Prepare a team. Quietly. No one fires unless necessary."

Isabela gripped his sleeve.

"I am coming."

"No."

"She's my daughter."

"And I will bring her back."

"You don't understand what it means to be separated from your child."

Dante looked at her.

He thought of the twelve years he had spent believing Elena was dead.

Perhaps he did understand.

But before he could speak, his security chief entered with a new report.

The facility had been abandoned three months earlier.

The only recent activity came from a vehicle registered to Adrian Montenegro.

Dante stared at the name.

His cousin had supposedly died fifteen years ago.

Elena leaned against the table.

"He didn't die."

"How do you know?"

"Because Adrian was the man who helped me escape the fire."

Isabela looked between them.

"Then why would he take Sofia?"

Elena's voice trembled.

"Because Adrian believes the child belongs to him."

Dante felt the room tilt.

"Explain."

Elena looked at him with unbearable sadness.

"Sofia's father is Adrian Montenegro."

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then Dante's phone rang.

The caller ID showed Rafael.

Dante answered.

His uncle's voice was calm.

"Bring me the ledger, and I'll give you the child."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"And Elena?"

"Your sister made her choice twelve years ago."

"She is alive."

Silence.

Then Rafael laughed softly.

"Then you have even more to lose."

The call ended.

Dante turned to Isabela.

"Your daughter is the key to a war that began before she was born."

Isabela wiped her tears.

"Then end it."

May you like

For the first time, Dante understood that bringing Sofia home would not be enough.

He would have to destroy the system that had made her a target.
