Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE MONTENEGRO NAME FELL

Rafael Viana moved first.

Before Dante could submit the financial evidence to investigators, Rafael arranged for documents from Dante's business empire to be leaked to the press.

Some were authentic.

Others had been altered.

By morning, the Montenegro name was everywhere.

Banks suspended transactions. Business partners withdrew from negotiations. Reporters gathered outside the estate, demanding answers about Dante's criminal connections and Isabella's mysterious disappearance.

Dante's lawyers warned him that the scandal could threaten his legitimate companies.

His security chief recommended that the family leave São Paulo.

But Dante refused to abandon his employees or allow Cecilia's actions to disappear beneath a cloud of rumors.

He called a press conference.

Standing before the cameras, he acknowledged that his family's foundation had been mismanaged and that investigators were reviewing serious allegations.

He refused to discuss confidential evidence or accuse anyone without proof.

Then he made one statement that changed the room.

“My wife was taken from our family through deception. My children were deprived of their mother. I will not use my wealth or influence to prevent the truth from coming out.”

Across the city, Cecilia watched the broadcast in disbelief.

She had expected Dante to deny everything.

Instead, he had chosen accountability.

Helena stood beside Isabella at the estate, helping the boys prepare for bed.

The scandal frightened them, but the children had begun to develop a routine that included both women.

Tomás wanted Isabella to read the bedtime story.

Miguel wanted Helena to sing.

Neither woman complained.

Later that evening, Helena received an anonymous message.

Your mother kept something else from you. Ask Dante about the night you were born.

She showed him the message.

Dante contacted the former hospital administrator.

Dr. Nunes confirmed that Mariana had once helped deliver a baby girl at a clinic after an emergency involving Helena's family. But the records had been incomplete, and he could not establish a connection to Isabella's case.

Helena was shaken.

For the first time, she wondered whether her mother's silence had concealed a family secret unrelated to the Montenegro scandal.

Dante promised to help her investigate, but he refused to invent answers.

“You deserve the truth,” he told her. “Even if the truth turns out to be ordinary.”

Meanwhile, Rafael made a mistake.

He contacted one of Dante's former accountants and demanded that the man destroy the original records.

The accountant recorded the conversation.

The recording, combined with Cecilia's financial documents, gave investigators grounds to examine Rafael's role in the conspiracy.

The scandal that had threatened to destroy Dante's legitimate businesses began turning against the people who had manufactured it.

But Cecilia still possessed one final weapon.

She had obtained a court order demanding an immediate review of Isabella's identity and the twins' guardianship.

Her petition claimed that Isabella's disappearance had left the children vulnerable and that Dante's criminal associations made him an unsuitable guardian.

The hearing was scheduled for the following morning.

And Helena realized that the truth might not be enough.

They would need to prove that the children were safe, loved, and finally surrounded by adults who put their needs first.
