Chapter 2 - The Storm Breaks

The penthouse on Lake Shore Drive had never felt so quiet, yet the silence was suffocating.

Luke Morgan arrived home at seven in the evening, expecting the usual quiet warmth that Sophia always brought into his life. He expected the faint scent of jasmine tea, her sketchbooks scattered neatly across the cedar drafting table near the bay window, and the calm that seemed to exist only where she was.

Instead, he found his mother, Isabella, sipping scotch in the grand salon, and Vanessa seated across from her, radiating an air of triumphant belonging.

"Luke, darling," Isabella purred, setting her crystal glass down. "You're finally back. Vanessa was just telling me about her foundation's latest gala."

Luke didn't look at Vanessa. His dark, piercing eyes swept across the vast, pristine living room. The drafting table was bare. The throw pillows Sophia had hand-embroidered were gone.

"Where is Sophia?" Luke’s voice was low, laced with the quiet authority that made boardrooms in three countries fall dead silent.

Isabella waved a dismissive hand. "She made a dramatic little exit an hour ago. Honestly, Luke, the girl has completely lost her mind. She packed a single bag like a runaway teenager and claimed she was divorcing you."

Vanessa offered a soft, rehearsed sigh. "Luke, I’m so sorry. I told Isabella I should leave, but she insisted I stay. If my presence caused a misunderstanding between you two..."

Luke didn't hear a word. His long strides carried him straight up the spiral staircase and down the corridor to their master suite.

The door was ajar.

The walk-in closet was almost entirely intact—hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of couture gowns, diamond necklaces, and Birkin bags hung untouched. She had taken nothing he bought her. She had taken only her beat-up denim jacket, her college sketchbooks, her laptop, and her dignity.

On his bedside table, sitting flat beneath the dim glow of the lamp, was an unsealed manila envelope.

Luke pulled out the crisp white pages.

*PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.*

*Petitioner: Sophia Morgan.*

*Respondent: Luke Morgan.*

His hands, steady enough to sign billion-dollar hostile takeovers without a twitch, trembled violently. Stamped on the first page was Maya Collins’s law firm seal. Attached was Sophia’s signature—flawless, firm, without hesitation. Under the property division clause, she had marked a single box: *Waived.* She demanded zero spousal support, zero real estate, zero assets.

She didn't want his money. She just wanted to be erased from him.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was his younger sister, Dr. Elena Morgan.

Luke answered instantly, his throat raw. "Elena. Sophia left."

A heavy, terrified silence met him on the other end of the line.

"Elena?" Luke demanded, his voice fracturing. "Did you know about this?"

"Luke," Elena whispered, her voice tight with professional protocol and deep personal dread. "Where are you?"

"I’m in our bedroom looking at divorce papers," Luke snarled, panic burning through his veins. "Tell me what the hell is going on!"

"I can't talk to you right now," Elena said, her voice shaking. "Come to the hospital. Private staff entrance. Right now."
