Chapter 11 - The Shadow Returns

By Sophia’s sixth month of pregnancy, Chicago had settled into the deep chill of winter.
Aura Interior Architecture was thriving, and Sophia was glowing. Her baby bump was rounded and prominent beneath her soft cashmere dresses.
Luke had held true to every single promise. He had officially cut off Vanessa completely, severed his mother's financial access to family trusts, and stood by Sophia with unyielding patience. The divorce papers still sat in Maya’s office safe, unsigned by Luke, waiting for Sophia’s final verdict.
Tonight was the grand opening of the South Loop Cultural Center—Sophia’s crowning architectural achievement.
Luke stood beside her in the magnificent glass atrium, his hand resting tenderly, protectively on the small of her back. The city’s elite had gathered to celebrate her, not as Luke Morgan's wife, but as Sophia Vance, the visionary architect.
"You look breathtaking," Luke murmured in her ear, his thumb brushing against her hip. "And the baby is kicking up a storm."
Sophia smiled, leaning slightly into his touch. "He likes the classical music."
"He?" Luke froze, his eyes lighting up with ecstatic joy. "It's a boy?"
Sophia laughed softly, blushing. "I was going to tell you over dinner tonight."
Luke pulled her into his arms right there in the middle of the crowded gallery, burying his face in her hair, unashamed of the reporters and guests watching them. "A boy. Sophia... you’ve given me everything."
"Luke," she said softly, her fingers catching his lapel. "Tomorrow... I’m calling Maya. I’m withdrawing the divorce petition."
Luke stopped breathing. His eyes welled with tears. "You mean it?"
"You earned it, Luke. We’re going home."
Just as Luke leaned in to press his lips to hers, the grand glass doors of the atrium swung open with a violent gust of winter wind.
A woman walked in, soaking wet from the freezing sleet outside, her hair matted, a manic gleam in her eyes. It was Vanessa.
Security rushed toward her, but Vanessa raised her hand, clutching a thick medical folder and screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Luke! Don't touch her!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the concrete walls, silencing the entire ballroom. "She played you! Ask her who the real father is! Ask your sister Elena what she hid in the clinic's records six months ago!"
The entire room turned toward Sophia.
Luke stepped in front of Sophia like a fortress, his fists clenched, pure fury radiating from his body. "Get her out of here before I kill her!"
"Look at the dates, Luke!" Vanessa screamed as three guards tackled her to the marble floor, her documents scattering across the polished tiles. "She was with Julian Ward in New York four weeks before your anniversary! Elena forged the conception timeline to save her skin!"
Sophia’s heart dropped into her stomach.
She turned to look at Luke—and for a fraction of a second, just an imperceptible beat of hesitation, she saw the doubt flicker in his gray eyes.

Suddenly, a sharp, searing pain tore through Sophia’s abdomen. She gasped, clutching her belly, her knees buckling beneath her as a deep crimson stain bloomed across the hem of her emerald gown.
"Sophia!" Luke screamed, his hands reaching out as darkness rushed to meet her.
