Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN BEGINS

The main boardroom was a massive, soundproof chamber featuring a thirty-foot mahogany table overlooking the Chicago skyline.
The seven board members took their seats along the perimeter. Marcus Sterling sat at the far end, his legal team opening leather folders beside him.
Celeste stood near the door, her hands trembling so violently she nearly dropped her iPad. She kept darting frantic glances between me and the hallway, waiting desperately for Julian to arrive.
At precisely eight-fifty-nine a.m., the boardroom doors burst open.
Julian stepped in, looking brimming with confidence. He was holding a leather presentation binder, a sleek smile playing on his lips. He hadn't seen me yet, as my seat was positioned at the head of the table behind a tall leather chair.
"Good morning, members of the board! Marcus," Julian announced loudly, striding toward the head of the table. "Today marks a historical milestone for Hartwell Industries. We are gathered here to ratify the strategic merger and asset acquisition agreement with Sterling Global, a deal that will yield—"
Julian stopped mid-sentence.
He had reached the head of the table. I slowly rotated the high-back leather chair around to face him.
Julian's words died in his throat. His eyes bulged out. The leather binder in his hand slipped, hitting the carpeted floor with a heavy thud.
"Good morning, CEO Bennett," I said, resting my hands on the mahogany surface. "Please, take a seat. We have a lot to discuss."
"Maya?!" Julian gasped, looking around the room at the silent, stone-faced board members. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are you sitting in the Chair's seat?!"
"Because she IS the Chair, Julian," spoke up Howard Vance, the senior independent board member and my father's lifelong confidant. "Mrs. Bennett holds sixty-four percent of the voting equity in this room. She called this emergency session."
Julian's head whipped toward Celeste, who was standing by the door looking ready to faint.
"Did you let her in here?!" Julian roared at her.
"J-Julian..." Celeste stammered, tears welling in her eyes. "She... she's Mrs. Bennett! She's the owner!"
"Shut up!" Julian yelled, losing his executive composure entirely. He turned back to the board, trying to laugh it off. "Gentlemen, ladies, please forgive this distraction. My wife is currently going through a personal emotional crisis. She has no corporate authority to pause this meeting—"
"I have every legal authority, Julian," I interrupted, tapping a red button on the control panel in front of me.
A massive wall-mounted projector screen descended behind me, glowing to life.
"Over the last three weeks," I announced clearly, "while working as an administrative temporary worker under the name Maya Hart, I conducted an independent forensic audit of our primary accounts."
A document appeared on the screen—a enlarged wire transfer receipt for $1.8 million routed to Aura Luxe Logistics.
Julian gasped, taking a quick step backward.
"This is a proprietary financial ledger," I continued, scrolling to the next slide. "It shows systematic embezzlement of over $2.25 million from our research and development funds over the past six months. Routed directly into an offshore account owned by your executive assistant, Celeste Price."
The entire room gasped. Marcus Sterling's eyes narrowed into slits as he looked at Julian.
"This is a setup!" Julian shouted, slamming his fist onto the table. "This is fabricated! She's doing this out of marital jealousy because I asked her for a divorce!"
"Are these signatures fabricated, Julian?"
Arthur Vance stepped out from the side door, holding an original paper dossier. He handed copies directly to every board member and to Marcus Sterling.
"These are federal bank verification forms," Arthur announced in his raspy, authorative voice. "Signed by Julian Bennett, authorizing wire transfers to Aura Luxe Logistics in exchange for fake supply invoices. And here are the corporate liquidation contracts he secretly drafted to sell our core patents to Sterling Global for a private $5 million kickback."
Marcus Sterling looked down at the document in his hands, then slowly looked up at Julian with absolute disgust.
"You told me this sale was fully authorized by the family trust, Bennett," Marcus said, his deep voice dripping with malice. "You tried to use my firm to launder stolen corporate assets?"
May you like
"No! Marcus, listen to me!" Julian panicked, sweat pouring down his forehead, soaking his high-end collar. "It's not what it looks like!"
"It looks like grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate treason," I said, standing up from my chair and looking down at the man I used to love. "And it ends right now."
