Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT ELIZABETH TRIED TO SAVE HER FAMILY

The investigation into Elizabeth's death moved slowly.
Medical experts reviewed her records. Investigators interviewed former employees of the hospital. Financial analysts traced the payments that had passed through Michael's companies.
The evidence established serious financial misconduct and documented threats against Elizabeth.
It did not yet establish that anyone had deliberately caused her death.
Daniel struggled with the uncertainty.
He wanted to know whether Elizabeth's final days could have been different. He wanted to understand why she had kept her fears from him.
Rebecca reminded him that answers required evidence.
Then a former hospital administrator came forward.
Her name was Patricia Wells, and she had worked at the facility where Elizabeth received treatment.
Patricia explained that she remembered Michael arriving shortly before Elizabeth's final hospitalization. He had presented himself as a family representative and requested access to certain records.
When the hospital refused, he contacted a senior administrator and claimed Daniel had authorized the request.
The authorization was later found to contain irregularities.
Patricia had preserved copies because she suspected the documents had been altered.
The records did not prove that Michael had caused Elizabeth's death, but they showed that he had attempted to obtain confidential information without proper permission.
More importantly, one document contained a handwritten note from Elizabeth.
I believe Michael has access to information he should not possess. Please do not release my records without contacting Daniel directly.
Daniel read the note in his office.
He remembered the last conversation he had with Elizabeth.
She had been lying in bed, exhausted after treatment, when he asked whether she needed anything.
She had smiled and said she only wanted him to take Lily to the park.
He had promised to do it the following weekend.
There had been no following weekend.
Daniel covered his face with both hands.
For eighteen months, he had blamed himself for being too busy, too distracted, and too slow to recognize how much his wife was suffering.
Now he understood that Elizabeth had been trying to protect him and their daughter from a threat she could not fully explain.
He would never know every thought that had passed through her mind.
But he could honor her by protecting Lily.
The following afternoon, Daniel took his daughter to a quiet garden near the hospital.
Lily wore a yellow sweater and carried her favorite stuffed rabbit.
They sat beside a fountain.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Is Mommy angry with me?”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Why would you think that?”
“Because I couldn't keep her secret.”
He put an arm around her.
“Sweetheart, you were never responsible for protecting grown-ups from the truth. That was never your job.”
Lily looked at the fountain.
“Victoria said Mommy would be disappointed if I told.”
Daniel felt his heart break.
“Your mother loved you because you were you. She would never ask you to be frightened or hurt to prove your love.”
Lily leaned against him.
“Can we go to Mommy's garden?”
Daniel nodded.
They visited the small memorial garden Elizabeth had loved. He placed fresh flowers beside her photograph while Lily sat on the bench and whispered a story about her school day.
For the first time since the pool incident, she laughed.
Daniel listened as she described a classmate who had drawn a purple dog and insisted it was a horse.
The ordinary sound of her laughter felt like a miracle.
Later that evening, investigators contacted Daniel.
They had located an encrypted file on Elizabeth's old laptop. A specialist had recovered part of its contents.
The file contained a draft email Elizabeth had never sent.
It was addressed to Daniel.
I have proof that Michael has been using the foundation to conceal private transfers. I also have reason to believe someone close to us has been giving him access to our home.
I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid that confronting him too early would put Lily at risk.
If I cannot finish this myself, please don't let anyone turn our daughter's grief into a weapon.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward Lily's bedroom, where a night-light shaped like a crescent moon glowed beside her bed.
He understood what Elizabeth had been trying to do.
She had not been hiding the truth because she doubted him.

She had been trying to gather enough evidence to protect their family.
Now it was his turn.
