Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Michael Ashford had spent his entire adult life believing that consequences were for other people.
His family had money, connections, and a reputation that opened doors. When he made mistakes, someone cleaned them up. When he disappointed a business partner, his sister found another investor. When a contract went wrong, his lawyers negotiated a settlement.
He had never expected to face a serious criminal investigation.
Now the authorities were examining his accounts, and Daniel Hayes had stopped answering his calls.
Michael summoned Victoria to his apartment.
She arrived wearing sunglasses and a dark coat, looking exhausted.
“You told me the girl was making things up,” she said.
Michael poured himself a drink.
“She is a child. Children repeat what they hear.”
“She nearly died!”
“And she survived.”
Victoria stared at him.
For the first time, her brother's indifference frightened her more than the investigation.
“You said Daniel would eventually marry me. You said Lily would accept me.”
“Daniel is a grieving man with too much money and not enough judgment. I thought you could handle the situation.”
“Handle it?”
Michael set down the glass.
“You wanted that family, Victoria. You wanted the house, the name, the influence. I helped you get close enough to secure your future.”
She shook her head.
“You used me.”
“You agreed to everything.”
Victoria sat down.
She remembered the first time Michael introduced her to Daniel. She had known Elizabeth was ill, but she had not expected to become so deeply involved in the family's life.
At first, she genuinely tried to help.
Then Michael explained the financial opportunities available through the estate. He promised that the money would be replaced before anyone noticed.
Victoria had told herself it was temporary.
She had accepted gifts, signed documents, and ignored questions she should have asked.
Over time, the lies became easier.
Until the afternoon at the pool.
Now she couldn't escape the memory of Lily's terrified face.
“What do I do?” she whispered.
Michael leaned forward.
“You tell investigators that Daniel has become unstable. You say he attacked you, that Lily was confused, and that the documents are fabricated.”
Victoria stared at him.
“You want me to lie?”
“I want you to survive.”
She left without answering.
That night, Victoria sat alone in her apartment and listened to an old voicemail from Elizabeth.
She had saved it years earlier, after Elizabeth called to ask why Victoria had attended a foundation meeting without an invitation.
Elizabeth's voice was polite but firm.
“I don't know what Michael has told you, Victoria, but you should be careful about trusting him. He doesn't protect people. He protects himself.”
Victoria had dismissed the warning at the time.
Now she listened to it again.
Then again.
The next morning, she contacted Rebecca Lawson.
“I want to tell the truth.”
Rebecca arranged for her to meet with investigators and her own attorney.
Victoria admitted that she had accepted money from companies linked to Michael. She also disclosed that he had asked her to search Elizabeth's study for a sealed envelope shortly after the funeral.
She had found nothing.
Later, he told her that Elizabeth had hidden a second set of documents somewhere near the pool.
That was why Victoria had begun questioning Lily about her mother's belongings.
The child had mentioned a secret box.
Victoria had become convinced that Lily knew where it was.
When Lily refused to tell her, Victoria grew angry.
The assault had not been an accident.
Victoria had deliberately held Lily underwater to frighten her into revealing the hiding place, telling herself she would release the child before anything truly dangerous happened.
But she had lost control of the situation.
And Daniel had arrived in time.
Investigators documented the confession and began verifying every detail.
Victoria was arrested for her role in the assault and faced additional charges related to the financial investigation.
Before she was taken away, she requested one final meeting with Daniel.
He refused to meet her alone.
Instead, he agreed to a supervised conversation with Rebecca present.
Victoria sat across from him, her hands trembling.
“I know you hate me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“This isn't about what I feel.”
“I never intended to kill Lily.”
“You knew she was frightened. You knew she couldn't protect herself. And you chose to use that fear against her.”
Victoria began crying.
“I thought if she told me where the documents were, Michael would leave us alone.”
“Us?” Daniel asked. “You were protecting yourself.”
She lowered her head.
He stood.
“My daughter is receiving treatment. She has people around her who will help her feel safe again. You will not contact her.”
Victoria nodded.
For once, she didn't ask him to reconsider.
As Daniel left, he heard her whisper an apology.
He did not turn around.
Some apologies were sincere.
Some were necessary.

Neither could erase what had happened.
But the truth was finally coming out, and Lily would no longer have to carry it alone.
