Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

I didn't rise from the sofa. I simply crossed my legs, adjusted my ivory silk blouse, and looked at him with a quiet, chilling indifference that made him flinch.
"That, Daniel, is the reality you claimed I was too brainless to understand," I said calmly.
He stumbled into the living room, dropping his briefcase onto the floor. "There's been a mistake! A massive mistake! Northstar fired me today! They said... they said I violated corporate ethics! And then a process server handed me these divorce papers outside the office!"
He dropped to his knees before the coffee table, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. "They frozen all my accounts, Emily! The bank is repossessing the Mercedes tomorrow! Someone told the board about Apex Growth! You have to help me! You have to call your trust advisors and unlock the money!"
I looked down at him, feeling no anger—only a profound, pitying disgust.
"There is no money for you, Daniel," I said softly. "The trust accounts aren't family investment funds. They are the private corporate dividends of Carter Logistics Solutions."
Daniel blinked, utterly bewildered. "Carter Logistics? That... that small consulting firm you play around with?"
"I don't 'play around' with anything, Daniel," I said, my voice cutting through the air like a razor. "I own three proprietary supply chain patents licensed across North America. My business earns nearly half a million dollars a year. It paid for seventy percent of this house. It paid for that kitchen you bragged about. It paid for your lifestyle while you spent your executive salary buying designer watches and trying to impress a thirty-two-year-old sales rep."
Daniel’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. "You... you make half a million dollars?"
"I built an empire while you were busy taking credit for it," I continued, leaning forward slightly. "And on the night of your forty-third birthday, while I was standing in the hallway holding the cake I spent four hours baking for you, I listened to you tell six of your friends that I was useless. That I was brainless. That if you disappeared, I wouldn't even know how to pay the mortgage."
The memory hit him like a physical blow. The color drained completely from Daniel's face, leaving him deathly white.

"Emily..." he whispered, horror filling his eyes as the realization of what he had done finally crashed down on him. "You... you heard?"
"I heard every word," I replied, my tone devoid of emotion. "You thought I was a helpless ghost living in your house. You didn't realize that I was the foundation holding your entire world up. And now, Daniel... the foundation is walking away."
