Chapter 5 - The Cracks Appear

Within ten days, the pressure on Daniel began to show in terrifying, magnificent ways.

It started with small things. Daniel came home late every night, his eyes bloodshot, smelling heavily of executive lounge scotch. He was constantly on his phone in the backyard, his voice rising in muffled, frantic arguments with his friend Mark and his secret mistress, Victoria.

He didn't realize that I had installed a subtle, high-grade ambient audio recording system inside our home office and living room—a simple security feature for my logistics firm that I had reconfigured.

On Thursday evening, while I was preparing dinner in the kitchen, I listened to the live audio feed from his den through my wireless earbud.

"I'm telling you, Victoria, it's just a temporary cash-flow lag!" Daniel was almost pleading into his phone. "The dividend payout got caught in an administrative audit. I'll have the forty thousand for the office lease deposit by next Monday!"

A sharp, demanding female voice replied over his speakerphone. "Daniel, the commercial landlord in Hartford isn't going to hold the suite past Friday. You promised me Apex Growth would be fully operational by the end of the month! If you can't even secure thirty grand, how am I supposed to trust you're going to leave Emily?"

Daniel let out a frustrated groan. "Look, Emily is clueless. She doesn't even know what an escrow account is. I just need a few days to liquidate some of the personal stock options."

"Well, do it fast," Victoria snapped before hanging up.

In the kitchen, I calmly chopped red peppers for our salad.

Liquidate stock options? I thought with a quiet, icy chuckle.

What Daniel didn't know was that those stock options were held in a joint brokerage account managed by Clarissa Vance's financial firm. That very morning, Clarissa had filed a legal Notice of Marital Asset Preservation with the court, effectively freezing every single brokerage, stock, and credit asset bearing Daniel's name pending a full forensic investigation.

Ten minutes later, Daniel walked into the kitchen, looking five years older. His tie was loosened, his hair messy.

"Emily," he began, his voice lacking its usual boisterous arrogance. "Hey... quick question."

"Yes, honey?" I turned, offering him a picture-perfect, pleasant smile.

"I was looking at our joint brokerage app on my phone, and it's showing a system freeze," he said, trying to sound casual, though his throat was visibly dry. "Did you get any notice from the bank?"

I blinked with wide, innocent eyes. "Oh! The stock account? Yes! A nice man from the financial compliance firm called this morning."

Daniel took a step forward, his eyes wide with desperate hope. "What did he say?"

"He said they found some unusual, unauthorized transfer attempts to a Delaware LLC," I said brightly. "He said it looked like identity theft or corporate fraud! So I told him to freeze everything immediately to protect your hard-earned money! Wasn't that the right thing to do, Daniel?"

Daniel stared at me, his color draining entirely until his skin resembled grey ash. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

"I saved us!" I added, clapping my hands together softly. "See? I'm learning to be practical!"
