Chapter 6 - The Shattered Mask

Diane leaned back against the plate-glass window, the sunlight outlining her trembling silhouette. The elegance, the untouchable society poise, the sneering superiority—it all dissolved into the pathetic desperation of a cornered criminal.

Arthur Pendelton stood up from the board table, his face flushed with outrage. "My God, Diane. Is this true?"

"It’s... it’s an AI deepfake!" Diane shrieked, her voice pitched unnaturally high. "You can fake voices now! You can generate anything on a computer! Richard, my love, you know me! We've been married for seven years! Would I ever do this to you?"

Claire stepped forward, unbuttoning her blazer and placing a thick leather-bound binder onto the conference table. She opened it to a series of forensic accounting reports, highlighted in neon yellow.

"This isn't an AI voice, Diane," Claire said, her tone cool, analytical, and devastating. "And these aren't deepfakes. These are certified wire receipts from the Sterling Foundation's charity accounts directly into Julian Vance’s shell companies over the last eighteen months. Three hundred thousand here. Half a million there. A total of twelve point four million dollars embezzled from sick children to fund your jewelry habits, your overseas properties, and your hush money."

Richard slowly rose from his chair. The transformation was terrifying. The broken, fragile old man who had dropped his pen moments ago was gone. In his place stood the ruthless titan who had built an empire from scrap metal and cargo ships.

He walked around the long table. Every step of his leather shoes sounded like a gavel striking a block.

"Richard..." Diane whimpered, reaching out with both hands. "Richard, please, I was trying to save us—"

Richard didn't touch her. He stopped two feet away, looking at her not with anger, but with absolute, nauseated disgust.

"You brought another man into my home," Richard whispered. "You slept with a criminal in my city. You tried to rob my family. But worst of all..." Richard’s voice dropped into a register of terrifying fury. "You made me doubt my dead wife. You made me look at my only son—the boy I held in my arms the night his mother slipped away—and treat him like a stranger."

"Richard—"

"Get your hands off my property," Richard commanded.

Behind Ryan and Claire, the federal prosecutor stepped forward, flashing a gold badge alongside two armed US Marshals who had waited quietly by the boardroom doors.

"Diane Sterling," the prosecutor announced. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and interstate extortion. You have the right to remain silent."

Diane’s eyes went wild. She turned to the board members—men who had kissed her cheek at galas, women she had lunched with at the country club—seeking an ally. Every single one of them looked away in disgust.

As the marshal snapped the cold steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists, Diane’s composure broke into pure, unhinged malice. She lunged toward Claire, her teeth bared like a wild animal.

"You miserable little nobody!" Diane screamed, her spittle flying across the polished table. "You think you’ve won? You're nothing! You came from a broken-down family, and you'll always be an outsider! I should have rubbed your face in that cake until you choked on it!"

Claire didn't flinch. She stood perfectly still, watching as the federal agents restrained Diane and dragged her toward the private elevator.

"The cake was delicious, Diane," Claire said softly, loud enough only for Diane to hear as she was pulled past. "Too bad prison food doesn't come with buttercream."

The elevator doors closed, sealing Diane’s screaming fury away from the world forever.

In the heavy quiet that followed, Richard turned slowly toward Ryan. The old billionaire’s shoulders shook. He took a staggering step forward, reaching out a trembling hand toward his son’s chest.

"Ryan..." Richard whispered, tears finally breaking free and tracking down the deep lines of his face. "My boy... what have I done?"
