Chapter 3 - The Cold Exile

By sunrise the next morning, the Sterling scandal was the lead story across every financial tabloid and social media platform on the East Coast.
Leaked cell phone footage of Diane smashing the cake into Claire’s face had racked up millions of views, captioned with sensational headlines: *Billionaire Birthday Brawl* and *Sterling Heir Ousted in Bastard Scandal*.
Claire sat at the small kitchen island of their private downtown apartment—one of the few properties registered under her name alone, purchased with her own inheritance before their marriage. She wore an oversized sweater, her hair pulled back into a tight bun, surrounded by legal pads, financial printouts, and her laptop screen casting a pale blue light across her determined face.
Ryan walked into the kitchen, looking as though he hadn't slept in a decade. Dark hollows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He poured a cup of black coffee, his hands shaking slightly.
"My corporate card was declined this morning," he said flatly. "My keycard to the headquarters tower has been deactivated. Dad’s lawyers sent an email at six a.m. freezing all trust distributions pending 'clarification of lineage.'"
Claire closed her laptop halfway and looked at him. "He’s scared, Ryan. Diane has been whispering in his ear all night, feeding his paranoia. But fear makes people sloppy."
"Sloppy?" Ryan gave a bitter, hollow laugh. "Claire, she won. Half the board is already calling an emergency meeting to vote Diane onto the executive committee in my place. She’s taking my life's work, and my father is handing her the keys!"
"She hasn't won anything," Claire said, standing up and wrapping her arms around his waist. "She bought herself forty-eight hours. That’s all a lie can ever buy you before the truth catches up."
The front doorbell chimed, sharp and sudden.
Ryan tensed, glancing toward the entryway. "Who knows we’re here?"
Claire walked to the door, checking the security monitor. Standing in the hallway was Marcus Vance—or rather, a private investigator Claire had retained months ago, a sharp-featured former federal agent named Frank Miller.
Claire unlocked the door. "Tell me you have him, Frank."
Frank stepped inside, shaking off the morning rain. He pulled a thumb drive from his coat pocket and set it on the counter next to Ryan’s coffee cup.
"Julian Vance isn't hard to find if you know what bars he drinks at," Frank said, pulling out a small notebook. "He’s thirty-two, three years *younger* than Ryan. The idea that he fathered Ryan thirty-four years ago is biologically impossible. Diane panicked and threw out the first name of a man she was sleeping with."
Ryan let out a long, ragged exhale, gripping the edge of the counter. "He’s younger than me? Then why would Diane claim—"
"Because she didn't expect Richard to believe it forever," Claire realized, her eyes narrowing as the puzzle pieces clicked together. "She only needed Richard to believe it *last night*. She needed you disqualified before today’s emergency board meeting at two o’clock. If you aren't there to vote your shares, Diane and her proxy allies have enough votes to approve the liquidation of the overseas trust—the trust holding your mother’s original shipping patents."
Ryan’s face transformed from despair to cold, burning fury. "My mother’s patents. That’s what this has always been about. Diane doesn't just want my father's money. She wants to sell my mother’s legacy to the European consortium."
"And if she liquidates that trust," Frank added, "over sixty million dollars transfers directly into an offshore account controlled solely by Diane and her shell corporation in the Caymans. Julian Vance was her bagman. He was setting up the dummy accounts."
"Where is Julian right now?" Claire asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, calculated register.
Frank checked his watch. "He’s at the Royalton Hotel, suite 814. He has a flight booked to Zurich at six tonight. Diane gave him a first-class ticket and a suitcase of cash to disappear."
Claire turned to Ryan. The frosting was gone. The silk dress was ruined, but the woman inside was lethal.

"Get dressed, Ryan," Claire said quietly. "We're going to crash a going-away party."
