Chapter 11 - The Knock on the Steel Door

Three weeks after the gala, the winter winds had turned Manhattan into a canyon of ice.
Our wedding was set for May in Newport, Rhode Island, and Horizon Ledger had just closed an acquisition offer from a Swiss banking consortium that would push our valuation past three hundred million dollars. My life was an unbroken ascent.
On a freezing Tuesday afternoon, Jonathan Ross walked into my private office without knocking.
His face was grim.
"Ethan," Jonathan said, shutting the double doors firmly behind him. "We have a complication."
I looked up from my monitor, frowning. "Did Lauren violate the protective order again? If she did, tell the DA to remand her without bail."
"It’s not Lauren," Jonathan said quietly.
He pulled a thick, manila envelope from his leather briefcase and tossed it onto my glass desk.
"Chase Prescott’s legal defense team just filed an emergency discovery motion with the Southern District of New York," Jonathan said, leaning forward on both hands. "Prescott is attempting to cut a plea deal with the federal prosecutors."
"What does Chase’s fraud have to do with me?" I asked, cold suspicion creeping into my spine. "I never did business with him."
"You didn't," Jonathan replied, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "But two years ago, when Lauren was still living with you in that walk-up on Second Avenue... she stole something from your private hard drives."
I froze.
"What are you talking about?"
Jonathan opened the manila folder, sliding a series of printed bank transfer slips and proprietary source-code repositories across the desk.
"Chase didn't just build a Ponzi scheme out of real estate, Ethan," Jonathan said, his eyes drilling into mine. "The proprietary code that Prescott Capital used to manipulate high-frequency commercial loans... it was an early prototype of Horizon Ledger's core architecture."
The air left my lungs.
"Lauren copied your early repository onto a flash drive three weeks before she left you," Jonathan continued relentlessly. "She gave it to Chase. That was her 'entry ticket' into his circle. That was how she proved her loyalty to him."
My mind raced backward in time.
The late nights. Lauren sitting on the couch, watching me code. Asking innocent questions about where the backup keys were stored. The night she offered to clean my desk.
"And here is the kicker," Jonathan whispered, tapping the final document in the folder. "Because that code was stolen and integrated into Prescott Capital's illegal shell entities, the federal prosecutors believe Horizon Ledger was the original instrument used to orchestrate the eighty-million-dollar fraud."
Before I could speak, the frosted glass doors of my executive suite shuddered.
Two men in dark trench coats, flanked by three uniformed Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, pushed past my receptionist into the room.
The lead agent badge glinted under the recessed LED lights.
"Ethan Ward?" the agent announced, pulling a federal warrant from his breast pocket. "I’m Special Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division. We have a warrant for your arrest, and a seizure order for all servers associated with Horizon Ledger."
Through the glass wall behind the agents, I saw Clara standing near the elevators, her eyes wide with shock and horror as she dropped her architectural files to the floor.

And in the reflection of the glass, I saw Special Agent Miller pull a set of cold steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Hands behind your back, Mr. Ward," the agent said. "Right now."
