Chapter 10 - The Price of Arrogance

The fallout from the incident at the Plaza Hotel was swift, brutal, and utterly public.
Within hours, videos recorded by guests and hotel staff had leaked to TikTok and Instagram. Millions of views accumulated overnight under headlines that read: *GOLD DIGGER EX-GIRLFRIEND SOBS ON HER KNEES AT FINTECH BILLIONAIRE'S ENGAGEMENT.*
Lauren’s face—streaked with running mascara, her body groveling on the floor of the Grand Ballroom—became the defining image of catastrophic regret.
The NYPD processed her at the Midtown precinct for criminal trespass and violating an active order of protection. Because she couldn't afford the five-thousand-dollar bail, she spent forty-eight hours in a holding cell on Rikers Island before an overworked public defender managed to secure her release on recognizance.
When she walked out into the gray, freezing rain of the Queens borough, Denise and Callie were waiting on the curb under a broken umbrella.
"Did he say anything?" Denise asked frantically, grabbing Lauren's damp sleeve. "Did his lawyers offer a settlement to drop the charges? Did you get anything?!"
Lauren stared at her mother.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, Lauren saw Denise clearly: a bitter, grasping woman who had pushed her daughters to treat men like financial instruments, poisoning every genuine emotion in pursuit of a counterfeit status she could never achieve.
"Shut up, Mom," Lauren said, her voice entirely dead.
"Excuse me?!" Denise gasped.
"Shut up," Lauren repeated, pulling her arm away with a violent jerk. "You told me to leave him. You told me Chase was the real deal. You told me Ethan was a loser."
"You wanted him too!" Callie screeched defensively. "You wanted the Mercedes! You wanted the bags!"
"And look where it got us!" Lauren screamed at the top of her lungs, standing in the pouring rain while commuters hurried past, casting wary glances. "Chase is going to prison for twenty years! The bank is taking your house next Tuesday! I have a criminal record! I have no job! And the man who would have given me the world is marrying an heiress who looks down on me like dirt!"
She fell back against the concrete wall of the subway entrance, sliding down into a crouch, her head in her hands, weeping until her throat burned.
There was no rescue coming.
No handsome prince in an AMG Mercedes.
No quiet, steady engineer waiting at home with hot soup and a spreadsheet to protect her from the cold.
She had burned the bridge while standing on it.
Meanwhile, seventy floors above Manhattan, Clara and I were finalizing the floor plans for our private estate in the Hamptons.
"The terrace should face the ocean," Clara said, leaning over my shoulder as she drew a clean pencil line across the blueprint. "So every morning when the sun comes up, you remember how wide the horizon is."
I looked up at her, wrapping my arms around her waist, pulling her into my lap. "I don't need the ocean to remember that, Clara. I just need to look at you."
She laughed, resting her forehead against mine. "Smooth, Mr. Ward. But you still have to help me choose the stone for the fireplace."
Life had moved forward. It had expanded into beauty, purpose, and peace.

Or so I thought.
