Chapter 8 - THE MEETING OF LIARS

The special shareholder meeting began at nine on Monday morning.

The Bennett Holdings headquarters occupied thirty floors of glass and steel overlooking downtown Charleston. On the top floor, executives and shareholders gathered around a long conference table while cameras recorded the proceedings.

Adrian Vale arrived in a charcoal suit.

He carried a leather portfolio and wore the calm expression of a man who believed the outcome had already been decided.

Margaret sat beside him.

Vanessa arrived several minutes later and took a seat at the far end of the table.

She did not look at Ethan when he entered.

Rachel Cole accompanied him, along with two independent financial experts and a representative from the board's audit committee.

The chairman opened the meeting.

"We are here to consider Valecrest Capital's restructuring proposal and the transfer of certain shares held through the Bennett family trust."

Ethan stood.

"Before that vote takes place, I request that the board review evidence of fraud involving those shares."

Adrian smiled.

"This is a corporate meeting, Mr. Bennett, not a courtroom."

"Then you should have no objection to reviewing the records."

Ethan placed a folder on the table.

Rachel distributed copies to the board members.

The first document showed the suspicious transfers to Northstar Advisory.

The second showed the forged authorization bearing Claire's name.

The third showed the digital certificate had been revoked before the authorization was created.

Adrian glanced at the pages.

"These documents are incomplete and have not been authenticated."

Rachel remained composed.

"They have been reviewed by an independent forensic accountant. The original transaction logs have been preserved, and the relevant records have been submitted to investigators."

Adrian's smile faded.

Margaret rose.

"This is an attempt to sabotage a legitimate transaction. Claire Bennett has been making accusations against my daughter for weeks."

Ethan looked at her.

"Then you'll welcome the security footage."

He signaled to the technician.

The screen displayed the backyard.

Vanessa's hands struck Claire's back.

Claire fell.

The room fell silent.

Then the recording showed Vanessa returning to the purse after the ambulance departed.

No one spoke when she removed the documents.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Margaret's face turned white.

Adrian leaned toward the chairman.

"This footage is irrelevant to the share transfer."

"It establishes that evidence was removed from the scene," Rachel replied. "It also contradicts the statement that Claire never possessed the documents."

The chairman looked toward Vanessa.

"Do you deny taking the papers?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"No."

A murmur moved through the room.

"I took them," she continued. "But Adrian told me to."

Adrian shot to his feet.

"That's a lie."

Vanessa flinched.

For years, she had been afraid of disappointing her mother. Then she had been afraid of losing the money. Finally, she had been afraid of Adrian Vale.

But as she looked at the security footage, she saw Claire lying on the patio, clutching her stomach.

She remembered the sound of the ambulance.

She remembered Ethan's face.

And she realized that every attempt to protect herself had made the consequences worse.

"He told me the envelope contained copies of the trust documents," Vanessa said. "He said if I gave them to him, he could complete the transfer and make the missing money disappear."

Adrian's face reddened.

"You're emotionally unstable."

"Maybe," Vanessa replied. "But I'm telling the truth."

Rachel placed another document before the board.

"This is an email recovered from the finance department. It shows Adrian instructing Vanessa to use Claire's revoked digital certificate to authorize the transfer."

Adrian looked at Margaret.

Margaret looked away.

The room changed.

Until that moment, Adrian had believed the family would protect itself at any cost.

Now he understood that they were prepared to sacrifice one another.

The chairman called for a recess.

Before anyone could leave, two investigators entered the room.

They identified themselves, explained that they were conducting an investigation into suspected financial fraud and attempted unlawful restraint, and asked Adrian Vale to accompany them for questioning.

Adrian protested.

"This is absurd. I have done nothing wrong."

One investigator showed him a document.

"We have a witness who identified you in connection with the attempted abduction of Claire Bennett. We also have records linking your company to the disputed transfers."

Adrian's eyes moved toward the leather portfolio.

An investigator noticed.

"May we examine that?"

"No."

"Then please leave it on the table while we speak."

Adrian hesitated.

The portfolio remained closed.

But when the investigators opened it under the applicable procedures, they found the original yellow envelope.

Inside were Claire's missing documents, including the original authorization forms and a handwritten note from Vanessa.

The note contained six words:

He promised nobody would get hurt.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Ethan stared at the envelope.

For days, he had imagined finding it. He had imagined feeling victorious.

Instead, he felt exhausted.

The evidence was finally in the hands of the people who could investigate it properly.

The board suspended the proposed share transfer and commissioned an independent review of the trust.

Adrian was taken away for further questioning. Investigators continued examining the evidence against him, Vanessa, and Margaret.

But before the meeting ended, Margaret approached Ethan.

"Please," she whispered. "We can still settle this privately."

Ethan looked at the woman who had raised him.

"No."

"Your father would never have wanted the family exposed."

"My father left records because he knew the truth mattered."

"He loved us."

"Then why did you make him afraid of what you were doing?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

For once, she had no answer.

Ethan walked away.

In the elevator, Rachel handed him a copy of the recovered documents.

"We have enough to establish serious grounds for the investigation," she said. "But the legal process will take time."

Ethan nodded.

"I understand."

His phone rang.

Claire.

He answered immediately.

"How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine," she said. "How did it go?"

He looked at the yellow envelope in Rachel's hands.

"We found it."

Claire exhaled.

"Then maybe we can finally breathe."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Maybe."

But as he stepped outside into the bright morning sunlight, another message appeared on his phone.

May you like

It was from an unknown number.

You found the envelope. You still haven't found the money.
