Chapter 6 - MARGARET'S LAST WARNING

The following morning, Margaret Bennett arrived at the hospital with two attorneys.

She asked to speak to Ethan privately.

He refused.

"If you have something to say, say it here."

Margaret glanced at Rachel, who stood beside him.

"This is a family matter."

"No. It's a criminal investigation."

Her expression hardened.

"You have no idea what your father did to us."

"Then explain it."

For a long moment, Margaret seemed to age before his eyes.

Then she sat down.

"Your father was brilliant," she began. "He was also reckless. He invested in projects that failed, borrowed against assets he shouldn't have touched, and promised money he didn't have."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was trying to protect you."

"By forging documents?"

"I never forged Claire's signature."

Rachel placed a copy of the authorization on the table.

"Then how do you explain this?"

Margaret didn't look at it.

"I didn't create that document."

"Did you know about it?"

Margaret remained silent.

Ethan felt something cold settle in his chest.

"Mom."

She finally met his eyes.

"I knew Vanessa was moving money. I believed she was trying to cover the company's debts. I thought she could put everything back before anyone noticed."

"She stole twelve million dollars."

"She was trying to save us!"

"By framing my wife?"

Margaret's composure cracked.

"Claire was never supposed to be involved."

"She was involved when someone used her name."

"I didn't know Vanessa would push her."

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at his mother.

"You're admitting you knew Vanessa intended to stop Claire."

Margaret's face went pale.

"I didn't say that."

"You said you knew she was trying to keep Claire out of it."

"That's not the same thing."

"No. It's worse."

He stood.

"For years, I thought you were protecting this family. Now I see that you were protecting the people who were willing to hurt it."

Margaret rose slowly.

"You'll lose everything if you continue."

"Maybe. But I won't lose my wife to keep your secrets."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You think Claire loves you enough to forgive what you've done? You struck your own sister in front of a hundred people."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"You're right about one thing. I should never have hit Vanessa. I was wrong, and I'll answer for that. But my mistake doesn't excuse what she did."

Margaret looked at him as if she had expected anger and found something more dangerous instead.

Resolve.

She gathered her papers and left.

That afternoon, Rachel obtained a temporary order preserving the relevant company records. The order prevented the destruction or alteration of the financial files while the investigation proceeded.

Olivia's emails were submitted for independent verification.

The security footage was secured.

And a forensic accountant began tracing the transfers.

But the most important evidence was still missing.

The original yellow-envelope documents.

Ethan returned to the mansion and confronted Vanessa in her private sitting room.

She was packing a suitcase.

"Where are you going?"

"Somewhere you can't control me."

He placed a photograph of the empty envelope on the table.

"I want the documents."

Vanessa laughed without humor.

"You think I still have them?"

"Did you destroy them?"

"No."

"Then where are they?"

She looked away.

Ethan waited.

Finally, she whispered, "Adrian has them."

"Adrian Vale?"

"He said he'd keep them safe."

"Safe from whom?"

"From you."

Ethan stared at her.

"Why would he want documents that could expose the theft?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with panic.

"Because the documents don't just prove the transfers. They prove that the money was used to purchase shares in Bennett Holdings. Shares that are supposed to belong to the family trust."

"How many?"

"Enough to change control of the company."

Ethan felt the floor shift beneath him.

"How did Vale get involved?"

Vanessa sat down heavily.

"He promised to help us repay the money. He said that once he controlled the shares, the debt would disappear."

"And what did he want in return?"

"Control of the company."

The answer came out like a confession.

Ethan looked at his sister.

"You sold our father's company to a stranger."

"I was trying to save it!"

"You were trying to save yourself."

Vanessa covered her face.

For a moment, she looked less like the woman who had shoved Claire and more like the frightened child Ethan remembered from their childhood.

But sympathy could not erase what she had done.

"Where is Vale now?" he asked.

"I don't know."

"Vanessa."

"He called this morning. He said the deal was moving forward. He said if I told you anything, I'd be the only one who went to prison."

Ethan turned toward the door.

"You're going to tell the investigators everything you know."

She stood suddenly.

"Please. Ethan, don't do this."

He stopped.

"You had a choice when Claire was standing in front of you. You had a choice when she fell. You had another choice when you took the envelope."

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"And you chose to protect the people who hurt her."

He left.

In the car, Rachel called with an update.

"The forensic accountant found something unusual. Valecrest Capital has scheduled a special shareholder meeting for next week."

"To do what?"

"Vote on a restructuring proposal that would give Valecrest control of the company."

"Can they do that?"

"Not legally, unless the shares were transferred."

Ethan gripped the steering wheel.

"Then we stop it."

Rachel's voice grew serious.

"We need the original trust documents, the missing envelope, and proof of who authorized the transfers. Without those, Vale may argue that the transaction was legitimate."

Ethan looked toward the hospital.

"Then we'll get them."

But he had no idea that Adrian Vale was already preparing to make his next move.

And this time, he wasn't planning to threaten Ethan.

He was planning to make Claire disappear from the case entirely.
